Sternmarsch SPÖ Sektion Ottakring zum 1. Mai 1973 auf der Thalia- und Lerchenfelderstraße Richtung Rathausplatz. Freies Equlibrieren, Monologisieren & Delirieren des Bilderautors. Wien | AT · 1973 (© PP · # 3783 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Ach, wenn ich nicht in Kürze wieder im Videoschnitt-Studio an der insgesamt fünfstündigen Dokumentation „Peter Kubelka – Was ist Film. Programm 63 und Programm 64“ weiterarbeiten müsste / würde / bzw. eh gerne, sogar sehr gerne wollte! Was könnte ich dann über diese wirklich hervorragenden SW-Fotos aus mir heraussaugen, schreiben, ableiten – möglicherweise sogar: Wie könnte ich diese großartigen Dokumente: KONTEXTUALISIEREN? Also dann rasch die Sigmund Freudsche „via regia“ nach genommen und das Navi gestartet: Im Mai 1973 wohnte ich in einer ehemaligen Schneiderwerkstätte in einem Hinterhof in der Haberlgasse in Ottakring. Echte, ehrliche Bassenawohnung. Weder Wasser noch WC in der Wohnung: Wasser holen an der Bassena am Gang, dortselbst auch in das mit den anderen „Parteien“ im 2. Stock geteilte Häusl geschixxen. Damals hatte ich die von meinem Vater übernommene zweiäugige Rolleiflex-Kamera in Betrieb genommen, wunderbares Gerät mit 6 x 6 cm großem Negativformat. Mit einer Filmrolle waren 12 Aufnahmen möglich. Selbstverständlich als seit dem Gymnasium durch das NEUE FORUM eingeschulter Neuer Linker anteilnehmender Mitmarsch beim „Sternmarsch“ der SPÖ-Sektion Ottakring zum Rathausplatz, da und dort fotografierend. Was hätte ich mit dem Mobiltelefon, mit der LUMIX, mit der 6 K Blackmagic heutzutage bzw am vergangenen Mai 2026 fotografieren und filmen? Aber: die damaligen Aufnahmen sind doch großartig trotz oder gerade wegen der krassen Einschränkung: Der Mann am linken Bild mit der Nelke am Hut, mich ein wenig an William S. Burroughs erinnernd, hält das Mikrophon des in der seitlich umgehängten Aktentasche mitgetragenen Tonaufnahmegerätes in Richtung der marschierenden Kapelle. An der Häuserzeile auf der Lerchenfelderstraße ist der Schriftzug „ÖSTERREICHISCHE LÄNDERBANK” zu lesen bzw zu erahnen, auf der Stadtbahn-Überführung am Gürtel ebenfalls: „LÄNDERBANK” fragmentarisch zu sehen. Kopfsteinpflaster auf der Straße. Unterhalb eine Gruppe jugendlicher Radfahrer*innen, manche mit rot-weißen Papierbändern in den Speichen. Am rechten Bild ein junger Fahnenträger, mit einer Frisur, wie ich selbst sie lange Zeit im Gymnasium hatte, Scheitel, gewelltes Haar, der Zug ist weiter Richtung Zentrum gewandert, die Häuserzeile weiter im Hintergrund. Am rechten Bildrand ist der Scheinwerfer des am unteren Foto deutlich sichtbaren, am Straßenrand geparkten Jaguar E zu sehen. Das Auto, in dem der G-man Jerry Cotton immer zum Einsatz in Manhattan unterwegs war. Gerne selber weiterschauen udn delirieren! Ja – das waren Zeiten. Und jetzt?

Vienna | AT · 1973 (© PP · # 3783 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Oh, if only I didn’t soon have to/wouldn’t/or rather, would gladly, even very much want to, continue working in the video editing studio on the five-hour documentary „Peter Kubelka – What is Film. Program 63 and Program 64“! What could I then extract from these truly outstanding black and white photos, write about, deduce – perhaps even: How could I: CONTEXTUALIZE these magnificent documents? So, quickly retraced Sigmund Freud’s „via regia“ and started the GPS: In May 1973, I was living in a former tailor’s workshop in a courtyard on Haberlgasse in Ottakring. A real, honest tenement apartment. Neither water nor a toilet in the apartment: water had to be fetched from the communal basin in the hallway, and one also used the shared outhouse on the second floor, which was used by the other „units.“ Back then, I had put the twin-lens Rolleiflex camera I’d inherited from my father into operation—a wonderful device with a 6 x 6 cm negative format. One roll of film allowed for 12 exposures. Naturally, as a New Leftist, indoctrinated by the New Forum since high school, I participated in the „star march“ of the SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria) Ottakring section to the town hall square, taking photos here and there. What would I have been able to photograph and film with a mobile phone, a Lumix, or a 6K Blackmagic camera today, or rather, what would I have been able to photograph and film last May, 2026? But: the recordings from that time are magnificent despite, or perhaps even because of, the stark limitations: The man on the left, with the carnation in his hat, reminding me a little of William S. Burroughs, holds the microphone of the recording device he carries in a briefcase slung over his side, pointing it towards the marching band. The words „ÖSTERREICHISCHE LÄNDERBANK“ (Austrian Bank) are legible, or at least discernible, on the row of houses on Lerchenfelderstrasse, and fragmentarily visible on the elevated railway overpass on the Gürtel (Vienna’s ring road). The road is paved with cobblestones. Below, a group of young cyclists, some with red and white paper ribbons in their spokes. On the right, a young flag bearer sports a hairstyle I myself wore for a long time in high school: a side parting, wavy hair. The procession has moved on towards the city center, the row of houses further in the background. On the right edge of the image, the headlight of the Jaguar E-Type, clearly visible in the lower photo and parked at the side of the road, can be seen. The car that G-man Jerry Cotton always used to travel to missions in Manhattan. Feel free to watch and reminisce! Ah yes – those were the days. And now?
