„STAMPFER DREAMS“ von Thomas Renoldner im METRO Kinokulturhaus: Galapremiere, Konzert und Buchvorstellung! Bad Ischl, Wien | AT · 1977–2025 (© PP · # 3419 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Thomas Renoldners neuer Film „STAMPFER DREAMS“, der soeben den Publikumspreis beim Paris International Animation Film Festival gewann und bisher bei mehr als 20 internationalen Filmfestivals lief, hatte gestern bei knallvollem Haus Premiere und wurde gebührend gefeiert! Chapeau! Zum Auftakt des Abends ein Konzert der Musikgruppe „Die Knödel“, die die Komposition von Christof Dienz zum Film eingespielt hatten, sowie kurze Filme von Clemens Kogler, Iby-Jolande Varga und Anna Vasof. Thomas Renoldners Film „STAMPFER DREAMS“ ist eine Referenz an Simon v. Stampfer (1792–1864), Professor für Praktische Geometrie an der Technischen Universität Wien, der die „Strobscopischen Scheiben“ erfunden hatte, die als „Lebensrad“ einem frühen kinematographischen Apparat, eine wesentliche Vorstufe der Entwicklung des Films sind. Am 7. Mai 1833 präsentierte Simon von Stampfer seine Erfindung der »Stroboscopischen Scheiben oder optischen Zauberscheiben«, auf denen verschiedenste Animationen zu sehen sind, die die Vielfalt der Genres im (Animations-)Film, von der Gegenständlichkeit bis zur Abstraktion, vorwegnehmen.

Thomas Renoldner konnte durch die freundliche Leihgabe von Gerhard Pater Amand, dem Direktor der Sternwarte Kremsmünster, der im Stift Kremsmünster eine vollständige Sammlung dieser Wunderscheiben aufbewahrt, sowohl den 12-minütigen Film STAMPFER DREAMS unter Verwendung dieser Animationen als auch ein Buch zur Stampfer’schen Erfindung gestalten.

Dieses Foto war Teil meiner „Hausarbeit für die Studienrichtung Werkerziehung für Knaben“ an der „Angewandten“ zum Thema: „Kinematographie“ im August 1979. Das Lebensrad wird vor einem Spiegel aufgestellt, wobei die Illustrationen zum Spiegel gerichtet sind, der Betrachter/die Betrachterin schaut durch die Schlitze in der sich drehenden Schaube auf das Bild im Spiegel, da das zu sehende Bild aber unterbrochen wird, kommt es zu einem stroboskopischen „Nachbildeffekt“ auf der Netzhaut und das Gehirn setzt die unterschiedlich gezeichneten Phasen zu einem Eindruck von Bewegung zu sammen; Thomas Renoldners Buch „STAMPFER DREAMS“

‘STAMPFER DREAMS’ by Thomas Renoldner at METRO Kinokulturhaus: Gala premiere, concert and book launch! Bad Ischl, Vienna | AT – 1977-2025 (© PP – # 3419 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) Thomas Renoldner’s new film ‘STAMPFER DREAMS’, which has just won the Audience Award at the Paris International Animation Film Festival and has been shown at more than 20 international film festivals so far, premiered yesterday to a packed house and was duly celebrated! Chapeau! The evening kicked off with a concert by the music group ‘Die Knödel’, who had recorded Christof Dienz’s composition for the film, as well as short films by Clemens Kogler, Iby-Jolande Varga and Anna Vasof. Thomas Renoldner’s film ‘STAMPFER DREAMS’ is a reference to Simon v. Stampfer (1792-1864), Professor of Practical Geometry at the Technical University of Vienna, who invented the ‘Strobscopic Discs’, an early cinematographic device known as the ‘wheel of life’, which was an important precursor to the development of film. On 7 May 1833, Simon von Stampfer presented his invention of the ‘stroboscopic discs or optical magic discs’, on which various animations can be seen that anticipate the diversity of genres in (animated) film, from the representational to the abstract.
Thanks to the kind loan of Gerhard Pater Amand, Director of the Kremsmünster Observatory, who keeps a complete collection of these miracle discs at Kremsmünster Abbey, Thomas Renoldner was able to create both the 12-minute film STAMPFER DREAMS using these animations and a book on Stampfer’s invention.

This photo was part of my ‘term paper for the course of studies in work education for boys’ at the ‘Angewandte’ on the subject: ‘Cinematography’ in August 1979. The wheel of life is set up in front of a mirror, with the illustrations facing the mirror, the viewer looks through the slits in the rotating dome at the image in the mirror, but since the image to be seen is interrupted, there is a stroboscopic ‘afterimage effect’ on the retina and the brain puts the differently drawn phases together to form an impression of movement; Thomas Renoldner’s book ‘STAMPFER DREAMS’.
