Sprechstunde beim Computerflüsterer, Spezialgebiet Apple-Alternativmedizin. Abteilung „Lebenshilfe mit dem Ewigen Archiv“. Graz, Wien | AT · 2002 – 2024 (© PP · # 3257 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Was ich wirklich, WIRKLICH empfehlen kann in schweren Fällen von Computer-Abstürzen, bei Harddisc-Crash, wenn das überteuert gekaufte Gerät GAR NICHT mehr hochkommt: Einen Einlauf mit dem „Irrigator“ geben – gibt’s in allen Bständig-Filialen. (Gr. Foto rechts). Wenn auch das nicht hilft, dann kann das Display gut bei Camping-Ausflügen zum Spiegeleier-Braten verwendet werden – vorausgesetzt, der Akku hält noch eine Zeitlang – ein famoser Beitrag zur Nachhaltigkeit. Eine sehr beliebte Fehlermeldung bei meinem ersten Powerbook (s.u.) war: „Das ist nicht möglich, weil der Fehler -192 aufgetreten ist“ Darauf gabs nur eine Option: „OK“. Von dem, was mich die auf diesem Tableau versammelten apple Powerbooks, iBooks, MacBook Pros etc. gekostet haben, kann sicher eine mehrköpfige Familie lange Zeit leben. Das große Foto links entstand bei einem Krankenhausaufenthalt in Graz im Jahr 2002 vorm Schlucken der bitteren Pille: Selbstportrait mit dem Krankenhaus-Essen am iBook-Display, Kanülen-Eingang an der Hand. Weiß der Teufel, warum ich dieses Foto damals machte – aber es ist jedenfalls ein schönes Dokument der damaligen Mode, apple-Laptops in bunten Farben wie türkis, orange etc herzustellen.

Erstmals mit einem Computer gearbeitet habe ich in Montréal/CA, als ich mit einem AMIGA und einem einfachen Sprachsynthesizer-Programm den englischen Kommentar zu meinem Film „Mont Real“ erzeugte. Den ersten eigenen Computer kaufte ich 1991: ein Mac-Powerbook 100: SW-Display, 100 MB Harddisc, 12 (oder 16 MB?) RAM um 55.000 Schilling, etwa 3.600,- €. Das war damals ein Freundschaftspreis bei den apple-Friends ;-). Etwa 2 Wochen später war das Nachfolgemodell (mit Farbdisplay) um ca. 20.000 Schilling zu haben. Dann gings immer weiter, neue Geräte, größer, schneller – mehr Arbeitsspeicher, mehr „Leistung“, Peripheriegeräte, Drucker, Kabel, externe Lesegeräte für Speichermedien – Syquest, optical Discs – name it, it is. Immer wieder mal Neustart: Systemcrash – stundenlange Fehlersuche, Verzweiflung, Anrufe bei Freunden und Bekannten um Rat. Erleichterung, wenn „die Kiste“ wieder „hochfährt“. Arbeit mit Computer, Geld verdienen, Geld ausgeben. Programme kopieren, Programme kaufen. Software und „Vaporware“ (= eine Software, von der viel geredet wurde – die sich aber als „Vapor“ (feuchter Dampf) herausstellte. Access denied. Vor einigen Jahren musste ich einen Haufen Macs, Röhrenmonitore, Peripheriegeräte im Wert von rund 50.000 € zu einem speziellen Mistplatz der MA 48 bringen: Es war mir nicht mehr gelungen, die Geräte sinnvoll weiterzugeben. Eine groteske Nicht-Nachhaltigkeit, eine ungeheure Verschwendung von Ressourcen. Weiter geht’s. Geht’s noch?

Graz, Vienna | AT · 2002 – 2024 (© PP · # 3257 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) What I can really, REALLY recommend in severe cases of computer crashes, hard disk crashes, when the overpriced device will NOT start up AT ALL: give it an enema with the “irrigator” – available in all Bständig branches. (Large photo on the right). If that doesn’t help either, then the display can be used to fry fried eggs on camping trips – assuming the battery still lasts a while – a fantastic contribution to sustainability. A very popular error message on my first Powerbook (see below) was: “This is not possible because error -192 has occurred.” There was only one option: “OK”. A large family could certainly live off the money I spent on the Apple Powerbooks, iBooks, MacBook Pros, etc. assembled on this tableau. The large photo on the left was taken during a hospital stay in Graz in 2002 before I swallowed the bitter pill: a self-portrait with the hospital food on the iBook display, a cannula entrance on my hand. God knows why I took this photo back then – but it is certainly a nice document of the fashion at the time to produce Apple laptops in bright colors like turquoise, orange, etc.
I first worked with a computer in Montréal/CA when I used an AMIGA and a simple speech synthesizer program to create the English commentary for my film “Mont Real”. I bought my first computer in 1991: a Mac Powerbook 100: black and white display, 100 MB hard disk, 12 (or 16 MB?) RAM for 55,000 schillings, about €3,600. That was a bargain price for Apple friends at the time ;-). About 2 weeks later, the successor model (with color display) was available for about 20,000 schillings. Then it just kept going, new devices, bigger, faster – more RAM, more “performance”, peripherals, printers, cables, external readers for storage media – Syquest, optical discs – name it, it is. Time and again I had to restart: system crash – hours of troubleshooting, despair, calls to friends and acquaintances for advice. Relief when “the thing” “boots up” again. Working with computers, earning money, spending money. Copying programs, buying programs. Software and “vaporware” (= software that was talked about a lot – but which turned out to be “vapor”. Access denied. A few years ago I had to take a pile of Macs, CRT monitors, peripherals worth around €50,000 to a special waste disposal site run by MA 48: I had no longer been able to pass the devices on in a sensible way. A grotesque lack of sustainability, an enormous waste of resources. Let’s go on. Are you serious?
