Aufmarsch der SPÖ und Kundgebung auf dem Rathausplatz. Wien | AT · 1973 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv). Vor 47 Jahren fotografierte ich erstmals Aufmärsche, Kundgebungen und Demonstrationen zum Ersten Mai, „der als Tag der Arbeit, Tag der Arbeiterbewegung, Internationaler Kampftag der Arbeiterklasse oder auch als Maifeiertag bezeichnet wird. Er ist in Deutschland, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Österreich, Belgien, Teilen der Schweiz und in vielen anderen Staaten ein gesetzlicher Feiertag.“ (wiki)

Damals wohnte ich in einer Bassena-Wohnung in der Haberlgasse in Ottakring, einer ehemaligen Schusterwerkstätte, im Hinterhof, kein Wasser in der Wohnung, Gemeinschaftsklo am Gang. Es war mein erstes Jahr in Wien, nach der Matura in Bad Ischl – ich „sog“ die damals noch weitgehend graue Stadt in allen Facetten auf, mit meinem Mitbewohner ging ich nachts in die Wirtshäuser an der Hasnerstraße, dem „echten“ Leben zuhörend und -schauend, serbische Bohnensuppe und Bier, manchmal ins „Hellas“ am Naschmarkt oder ins „Alt-Wien“. Am 1. Mai 1973 jedenfalls begleitete ich den Aufmarsch der SPÖ-Bezirksorganisation Ottakring ab der Thaliastraße bis zum Rathausplatz. An diesem 1. Mai belichtete ich mit einer zweiäugigen Rolleiflex, die ich von meinem Vater übernommen hatte, zwei SW-Filme (Ilford FP 4) – je Film 12 Aufnahmen, also 24 gesamt, davon 9 vom Marsch durch Ottakring, 3 vom Rathausplatz. 8 Aufnahmen machte ich von der KPÖ-Kundgebung vor dem Parlament (siehe dazu Tableau „KPÖ-Kundgebung“).

Zu den Fotos: Fahnen- und SPÖ-Ottakring-Zeichen-Träger auf der Thaliastraße, begleitet von einem Radfahrer mit umgehängtem Fotoapparat; Kundgebung am Rathausplatz in Wien, am Rathaus eine stilisierte rote Nelke, die Parteiblume der SPÖ, umgeben von den Wappen der Bundesländer. Keine Vidiwall, keine weiteren Transparente. Darunter: Ein Mann wirft Geld in die Sammelbüchse einer „Festabzeichen-Verkäuferin“; ein Fahnenträger von einer Musikkapelle; ein Mann nimmt mit einem „Magnetophon-Band“ die Musik der Kapelle auf; ein Ordner mit Armbinde und Teilnehmer*innen der Kundgebung.

Die Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs (SPÖ) ist eine der ältesten bestehenden Parteien Österreichs und der erste Vertreter der politischen Linken des Landes. Gegründet 1889 in Hainfeld, Niederösterreich, als Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei (SDAP), hieß sie 1918 bis 1934 Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei Deutschösterreichs (SDAP). Während des Austrofaschismus und der NS-Diktatur war sie verboten. Von 1945 bis 1991 lautete der Parteiname Sozialistische Partei Österreichs.

At that time I lived in a Bassena apartment in Haberlgasse in Ottakring, a former shoemaker’s workshop, in the back yard, no water in the apartment, shared toilet in the corridor. It was my first year in Vienna, after the Matura in Bad Ischl – I “soaked up” the city, which was still largely gray at the time, in all its facets, with my roommate I went to the taverns on Hasnerstrasse at night, listening to “real” life and -looking, Serbian bean soup and beer, sometimes in the “Hellas” on the Naschmarkt or in the “Old Vienna”. In any case, on May 1, 1973, I accompanied the march of the SPÖ district organization Ottakring from Thaliastraße to Rathausplatz. On May 1st, I used a two-eyed Rolleiflex, which I had taken over from my father, to expose two SW films (Ilford FP 4) – 12 films per film, 24 in total, 9 of them from the march through Ottakring, 3 from Rathausplatz. I took 8 pictures of the KPÖ rally in front of the parliament (see tableau “KPÖ rally”).

No vidiwall, no more banners. Among them: a man throws money into the collection box of a “festival badge saleswoman”; a standard bearer from a band; a man records the music of the chapel with a “magnetophone tape”; a folder with an armband and participants in the rally.

The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) is one of the oldest existing parties in Austria and the first representative of the country’s political left. Founded in 1889 in Hainfeld, Lower Austria, as the Social Democratic Workers ‘Party (SDAP), it was called the German Democratic Workers’ Party of German Austria (SDAP) from 1918 to 1934. It was banned during Austrofascism and the Nazi dictatorship. From 1945 to 1991 the party name was the Socialist Party of Austria.
