Sozialporno, Exploitation, Sozialdoku: Lässt sich Armut und Reichtum darstellen? Wenn ja: Warum überhaupt? Jacob August Riis gewidmet. Pressbaum, Wien | AT · 2000–2020 (© PP · # 2136 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) „Going fully equipped“ ist eine recht kompakte „Phrase“ im Englischen für Menschen, die alles, was sie haben, mit sich herum schleppen/tragen/fahren. Unter dem expliziten Stichwort „Armut“ haben sich ganze zwei Bildeinträge im Ewigen Archiv gefunden, darüber war ich selber erstaunt. Natürlich einiges unter anderen Begriffen: „Luxus“ brachte 396 Ergebnisse, „fully equipped“ 242, „light sleeper“ (zugegeben ein etwas sarkastisch/doppeldeutiger Begriff für Menschen, die auf der Straße schlafen, teils untertags) förderte 324 Bilder herbei, „Bettler*in“ 46, „Randgruppe“ 603 – wobei sich natürlich manche Fotos begrifflich überschneiden. Lässt sich Armut darstellen? Was ist billiger Sozialporno, was ist fotografische Ausbeutung (Exploitation)? Beständige Fragen – zu Recht. Im Buch „Das Ewige Archiv – Heavy Duty XS“ habe ich einige Doppelseiten auf der Straße Schlafende, Kauernde, Bettler*innen etc veröffentlicht – natürlich ohne jemals ein Gesicht zu zeigen, fast immer von hinten, fast immer so fotografiert, dass die Menschen nicht merkten, dass sie fotografiert werden. Würde ich das heute wieder veröffentlichen? Viele Fragen, wechselnde Antworten. Eine davon: historisch gesehen haben in bestimmten Fällen Bilddokumente Aufmerksamkeit, Öffentlichkeit geschaffen und zu Veränderungen geführt. Eine Fotografie ist ein Bilddokument - wenn auch in vielen Fällen ein in jede Richtung biegsames, verwendbares.

Wichtige Fotograf*innen, die mir in diesem Zusammenhang spontan einfallen: Heinrich Zille, Dorothea Lange, Emil Kläger und Hermann Drewe, Walker Evans und insbesondere Jacob August Riis. (s. link)

Two picture entries were found in the Eternal Archive under the explicit keyword “poverty”, which amazed me myself. Of course, some under different terms: “Luxury” brought 396 results, “fully equipped” 242, “light sleeper” (admittedly a somewhat sarcastic / ambiguous term for people who sleep on the street, sometimes during the day) brought 324 images, “beggars * in ”46,“ marginal group ”603 – although some photos of course overlap conceptually.
Can poverty be depicted? What is cheap social porn, what is photographic exploitation? Constant questions – and rightly so. In the book “Das Ewige Archiv – Heavy Duty XS” I published a couple of double pages on the street sleeping, crouching, beggars etc – of course without ever showing a face, almost always from behind, almost always photographed in such a way that people do not realized that they were being photographed. Would I publish that again today? Lots of questions, changing answers. One of them: historically, in certain cases, image documents have drawn attention, created public and led to changes. A photograph is an image document – even if in many cases one that is flexible and usable in every direction. Important photographers who spontaneously come to mind in this context: Heinrich Zille, Dorothea Lange, Emil Kläger and Hermann Drewe, Walker Evans and especially Jacob August Riis. (see link)
