Shaheen Merali, Kurator, Künstler, Aktivist, Archivar. Wien | AT · 2014–2023 (© PP · # 2882 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Shaheen Merali lernte ich kennen, als er Anfang des Jahres Jahr 2014 durch die von ihm kuratierte, mit Student*innen erarbeitete Ausstellung „Fragile Hands“ im Heiligenkreuzerhof, der Universitätsgalerie der Die Angewandte, führte. (Foto li. oben) Ich war von der Ausstellung und insbesondere von seiner Führung so begeistert und beeindruckt, dass ich anschließend mit ihm sprach und ihn zu mir ins Studio einlud, daraus entwickelte sich dann ein bis heute anhaltender Kontakt. Er war später so freundlich, einen Text für mein Buch „Das Ewige Archiv · New Stuff“ zu schreiben und zur Eröffnung meiner Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle Wien zu sprechen. Auch im Video „Das Ewige Archiv · ordnen und geordnet werden“ ist eine längere Sequenz mit ihm zu sehen. (link s.u.) In diesem Sommersemester war er Visiting Professor an der Angewandten und konzipierte die Veranstaltungsreihe „pax praxis“, eine Reihe von drei Online-Events mit internationalen Künstler*innen und Wissenschafter*innen (alle Videos sind auf youtube, s. link. unt.) und zeigte im „Evidence Raum“ im Rahmen der Angewandten in der Postsparkasse einen Teil seiner sehr umfangreichen Plakatsammlung auf sechs Litfass-Säulen. Kernthemen dieser Sammlung sind Plakate und Flyer zu Black Artists, Kolonialismus, Rassismus . . .

Shaheen Merali (geboren in Tansania, lebt in Großbritannien) ist Kurator, Kritiker und Künstler asiatischer Abstammung. Er war Kurator des ersten Uganda-Pavillons „Radiance – They Dream in Time“ für die internationale Kunstausstellung der 59. Biennale von Venedig. Bei der Verleihung des Goldenen Löwen wurde dem Pavillon die besondere Erwähnung verliehen. Er war Co-Kurator von „Berlin Heist or the enduring fascination of walled towns“ für die 4. Mediations Biennale, Poznan, Polen (2014) und Co-Kurator der 6. Gwangju Biennale, Korea (2006).

Vienna | AT 2014–2023 (© PP # 2882 www.ewigesarchiv.at) I met Shaheen Merali when he was at the beginning of 2014 through the exhibition “Fragile Hands” in the Heiligenkreuzerhof, which he curated and was developed with students. the university gallery of Die Angewandte. (Photo top left) I was so enthusiastic and impressed by the exhibition and especially by his tour that I spoke to him afterwards and invited him to my studio, which then developed into a contact that has lasted to this day. He was later kind enough to write a text for my book Das Ewige Archiv New Stuff and to speak at the opening of my exhibition in the Kunsthalle Wien. A longer sequence with him can also be seen in the video “The Eternal Archive · ordering and being ordered”. (see link below) This summer semester he was a visiting professor at the University of Applied Sciences and designed the event series “pax praxis”, a series of three online events with international artists and scientists (all videos are on youtube, see link. below.) and showed part of his very extensive poster collection on six advertising pillars in the “Evidence Room” as part of the Angewandte in the Postal Savings Bank. The core themes of this collection are posters and flyers on Black Artists, colonialism, racism. . .

Shaheen Merali (born in Tanzania, lives in UK) is an Asian-descended curator, critic and artist. He was the curator of the first Uganda Pavilion “Radiance – They Dream in Time” for the international art exhibition of the 59th Venice Biennale. The pavilion received a special mention at the Golden Lion awards ceremony. He was co-curator of “Berlin Heist or the enduring fascination of walled towns” for the 4th Mediations Biennial, Poznan, Poland (2014) and co-curator of the 6th Gwangju Biennial, Korea (2006).
