Revisiting Nordbahn-Viertel und die „Freie Mitte am Nordbahnhof“. Ein neuer Stadtteil ist innerhalb kürzester Zeit entstanden. Wien | AT · 2018–2024 (© PP · # 3096 · www.ewigesarchiv.at). Das erste Mal war ich am Gelände des ehemaligen Nordbahnhofes im 2. Bezirk in Wien im Jahr 2018 mit einer der Critical-Mass-Fahrrad-Demos. Das Areal ist ein riesiges Stadtentwicklungsgebiet, auf dem in kürzester Zeit 1000-e Wohnungen, der „Austria-Campus“ und entsprechende Infrastruktur entstanden sind. Im Juli 2019 war das Gebiet vor der damals noch existierenden Nordbahnhalle die Stelle, an der Thomas Holzinger (Kamera) und ich ein Interview mit Elke Krasny, Kuratorin u. Professorin Akademie d. bildenden Künste, für mein Video „Das Ewige Archiv · ordnen und geordnet werden“ aufgenommen haben (obere Bildreihe, link zum Video s.u.) Elke Krasny berichtete davon, dass auch von diesem Bahnhof Jüdinnen und Juden zur Zeit des NS-Terror-Regimes in Konzentrationslager deportiert wurden, von der Bedeutung der Arbeit mit Archiven in diesem Zusammenhang und vom Projekt „Zukunft des Erinnerns“ bei dem Historiker*innen und andere Wissenschafter*innen zu den Deportationen forschen wollen.

Um die Zukunft der Halle, die auch Ort eines „Baulabors“ der TU Wien war, gab es einige Besorgnis, weil im Raum stand, dass sie den Plänen zur Stadtentwicklung im Wege stand. Am 10. November 2019 brach dann überraschenderweise und aus unklaren Gründen ein Brand aus – obwohl das Gebäude zu diesem Zeitpunkt unbenutzt und der Strom abgedreht war. Längst sind keine Spuren der Nordbahnhalle mehr zu finden, einzig der „Wasserturm“, der zum Befüllen der Dampflokomotiven diente, steht noch (2. Reihe re., 3. Reihe links)

Das „Städtebauliche Leitbild 2014“ für das Gebiet stammt vom Studio VlayStreeruwitz – Bernd Vlay und Lina Streeruwitz, der Tochter der Schriftstellerin Marlene Streeruwitz und sieht einen etwa 10 Hektar großen Grün- und Freiraum in der Mitte des Areals vor, die „Freie Mitte am Nordbahnhof“.

Revisiting Nordbahn-Viertel and the “Freie Mitte am Nordbahnhof”. A new district has been created in a very short time. Vienna | AT – 2018-2024 (© PP – # 3096 – www.ewigesarchiv.at). The first time I was at the site of the former Nordbahnhof station in Vienna’s 2nd district was in 2018 with one of the Critical Mass bicycle demos. The site is a huge urban development area on which 1000-e apartments, the “Austria Campus” and corresponding infrastructure have been built in a very short space of time. In July 2019, the area in front of the then still existing Nordbahnhalle was the location where Thomas Holzinger (camera) and I recorded an interview with Elke Krasny, curator and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, for my video “Das Ewige Archiv – ordnen und geordnet werden” (top row of images, link to video below). ) Elke Krasny reported on the fact that Jews were also deported to concentration camps from this station during the Nazi terror regime, on the importance of working with archives in this context and on the “Future of Remembrance” project, in which historians and other scientists want to research the deportations.
There was some concern about the future of the hall, which was also the site of a TU Wien “building laboratory”, because it was thought to be in the way of urban development plans. On November 10, 2019, a fire then broke out unexpectedly and for unclear reasons – although the building was unused at the time and the electricity had been turned off. There are no longer any traces of the Nordbahnhalle, only the “water tower”, which was used to fill the steam locomotives, is still standing (2nd row right, 3rd row left)
The “2014 urban development concept” for the area was created by Studio VlayStreeruwitz – Bernd Vlay and Lina Streeruwitz, the daughter of writer Marlene Streeruwitz, and envisages a green and open space of around 10 hectares in the middle of the area, the “Freie Mitte am Nordbahnhof”.
