Rekonstruktion einer Ausstellung aus dem Jahr 1983 in der Secession von Reimo Wukounig. Reminiszenzen meiner eigenen Ausstellung 1976 in der Secession anlässlich der heutigen Premiere von „Der Schmerzraum des Zöglings 33“. Mai 2023 um 19 Uhr ist es soweit: Das Video zu Person und Werk des Künstlers Reimo Wukounig, an dem ich und viele andere mehr als eineinhalb Jahre gearbeitet haben, wird in Wien erstmals in der Secession gezeigt. Ich bin aufgeregt – weniger wegen dem Video, das ist längst, fertig, sondern ich muss vorher den mittlerweile 80-jährigen Künstler, der nicht sehr gut bei Fuß ist, abholen, hoffe, dass die Projektion technisch ohne Probleme läuft (das ist oft meine Hauptsorge) und dass Besucher*innen kommen. Für eine Sequenz dieses Videos wollte ich die Ausstellung „Zeit der Trauer“ von Reimo Wukounig aus dem Jahr 1983 in der Secession „rekonstruieren“. Von der Ausstellung selbst gibt es einen Katalog (li.ob.), der aber erst einige Zeit nachher erschienen ist, in dem ein SW-Fotos des Hauptraumes veröffentlicht ist. Dieses Foto nahm ich als Grundlage und montierte – soweit ich es recherchieren konnte –farbige Reproduktionen einzelner damals ausgestellter Werke in einen Scan (li. unt.) und versuchte dann, den Hauptraum der Secession aus der gleichen Perspektive neu aufzunehmen, um eine Transition, eine Zeitklammer zwischen 1983 und heute zu ermöglichen. Ich nahm Kontakt auf mit Mitarbeiter*innen der Secession, insbesondere mit der Bettina Spörr, der Kuratorin der im Juni 2022 im Aufbau befindlichen Ausstellung von Siggi Hofer (Foto re. ob.) und beide erlaubten mir, während der Aufbauarbeiten zu drehen. Ich hatte in Größe des Suchermonitors der 4K-Videokamera die Konturen des Fotos aus 1983 auf eine transparente Folie gezeichnet und auf dem Monitor montiert. Martin Buchinger, der Kameramann ist rechts unten – hier stellvertretend für alle Mitarbeiter*innen am Video (s.u.), denen ich von Herzen dankbar bin. Das Foto links von ihm zeigt Reimo Wukounig im Jahr 2017 in seiner Ausstellung im Heiligenkreuzerhof in Wien.
Es gibt noch einen weiteren Grund, warum ich mich sehr freue, dass die Premiere in der Secession stattfinden kann: Gemeinsam mit Thomas Reinhold und Rainer Wölzl habe ich im Oktober 1976 in der Clubgalerie der Wiener Secession ausgestellt (s. SW-Plakat). Die Clubgalerie von damals im Untergeschoß gibt es längst nicht mehr – an ihrer Stelle sind die Clubräume, in denen heute die Vorführung des Videos stattfindet!

Kern des Videos bilden oftmalige Gespräche mit Reimo Wukounig, weitere Gespräche wurden geführt mit: Klaus-Albrecht Schröder, Gen.Dir. ALBERTINA Wien, Antonia Hoerschelmann, Kuratorin ALBERTINA Wien, Brigitte Borchhardt-Birbaumer, Kunsthistorikerin, Karlheinz Essl, Herbert Lachmayer, sowie Ulrike Loch, Leiterin einer Studie über Gewalt an Kindern und Jugendlichen in heilpädagogischen Institutionen der Jugendwohlfahrt und des Gesundheitswesens in Kärnten zwischen 1950 und 2000.

Reconstruction of an exhibition from 1983 in the Secession by Reimo Wukounig. Reminiscences of my own exhibition in 1976 in the Secession on the occasion of today’s premiere of “The Pain Room of Pupil 33”. Vienna | AT · 1976-2022 (© PP · # 2835 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Today, on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 7 p.m., the time has come: The video about the person and work of the artist Reimo Wukounig, in which I and many others have worked for more than a year and a half will be shown in Vienna for the first time at the Secession. I’m excited – less because of the video, it’s finished a long time ago, but I have to pick up the now 80-year-old artist, who is not on his feet, hope that the projection will run without any technical problems (that’s often mine main concern) and that visitors will come. For a sequence of this video I wanted to “reconstruct” the exhibition “Time of Mourning” by Reimo Wukounig from 1983 in the Secession. There is a catalog (top left) of the exhibition itself, but it only appeared some time later, in which a black-and-white photo of the main room is published. I took this photo as a basis and mounted – as far as I could research it – color reproductions of individual works exhibited at the time in a scan (bottom left) and then tried to take a new picture of the main room of the Secession from the same perspective in order to create a transition, a Allow time clip between 1983 and today. I got in touch with employees of the Secession, in particular with Bettina Spörr, the curator of the exhibition by Siggi Hofer that is being set up in June 2022 (photo top right), and both of them allowed me to shoot during the set-up work. I drew the contours of the photo from 1983 on a transparent film in the size of the viewfinder monitor of the 4K video camera and mounted it on the monitor. Martin Buchinger, the cameraman is on the bottom right – here on behalf of all the employees on the video (see below), to whom I am heartily grateful. The photo to his left shows Reimo Wukounig in 2017 in his exhibition at the Heiligenkreuzerhof in Vienna.
There is another reason why I am very pleased that the premiere can take place in the Secession: In October 1976, together with Thomas Reinhold and Rainer Wölzl, I exhibited in the club gallery of the Vienna Secession (see SW poster). The club gallery from back then in the basement is long gone – in its place are the club rooms where the video is shown today!
