Wien | AT · 1960-er–2021 (© PP · # 3108 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Filmemacher, Koch, Welterklärer: Peter Kubelka ist gemeinsam mit Peter Konlechner Gründer des Österreichischen Filmmuseums (1964) und eine der zentralen Persönlichkeiten des internationalen Avantgarde- und Experimentalfilmes. Zwischen der SW-Aufnahme links und der auf der rechten Seite liegen 33 Jahre. Das linke Foto nahm ich im Jahr 1988 in der Secession Wien auf, nach einem Konzert des von ihm gegründeten Ensembles Spatium Musicum, in der Secession war damals eine sämtliche Flächen bedeckende Wandmalerei von Sol Lewitt. Das Fotos rechts machte ich im Anschluss einer Einführung von Peter Kubelka im Filmmuseum zum von ihm zusammengestellten zyklischen Programm „Was ist Film“. Die Aufnahmen wurden auf SW-Negativfilm gemacht – also „analog“: im Jahr 1988, weil es zu dieser Zeit noch keine digitale Fotografie gab, im Jahr 2021, weil ich es adäquat fand, diesen Filmemacher, dessen Arbeit und dessen Vorträge ich seit langer Zeit besonders schätze und in dessen Werk die Materialität von Film, von Rhythmus und Struktur im Fokus steht, auch mit Film zu fotografieren. Außerdem wollte ich versuchen, eine Aufnahme in Relation zum Foto von 1988 zu produzieren. Beide Fotos entstanden mit einer Nikon Spiegelreflexkamera – allerdings war mir die Kamera, die ich vor 33 Jahren verwendet hatte, 2014 bei einem Studioeinbruch gestohlen worden.

„Peter Kubelka zählt zu den weltweit bedeutendsten Künstlern des unabhängigen Films. Seine metrischen Filme "Adebar" (1957), "Schwechater" (1958) und "Arnulf Rainer" (1960) stehen am Beginn der internationalen Entwicklung zum strukturellen Film, und Folgearbeiten wie unter anderem "Unsere Afrikareise" (1966) trugen maßgeblich zur Entwicklung des Avantgardefilms seit den 1950er Jahren bei. Seine Filme finden sich in den bedeutendsten internationalen Museumssammlungen, beispielsweise dem Museum of Modern Art (New York) oder dem Centre Pompidou (Paris). Peter Kubelka arbeitet weiterhin an seinem umfassenden Projekt einer künstlerischen Erforschung der Grundlagen und kleinsten Elemente menschlicher Kultur, zuletzt mittels des Forschungsprojekts „Schutt der Evolution“, welches seine seit den 1950er Jahren angelegte Sammlung kultureller Artefakte befragte.
