Nike von Samothrake, von Linz, von Irgendwo. Brussel / Bruxelles / Brüssel | BE; Linz | AT; Paris | FR; Samothrake | GR · 190 v. Chr. – 2024 (© PP · # 3221 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Vor wenigen Tagen hat mir mein Reality-Coach und Longtime-Buddy Markus Hanzer von einem Werbespot des Sportartikel-Konzerns Nike erzählt („Winning isn’t for everyone | Am I a bad person?“), den ich mir soeben, nach Fertigstellung dieses Tableaux, angeschaut habe. Ich stimme mit ihm und einigen Kommentaren auf youtube, wo der spot bereits 2 Mio+ views hat, überein, dass dieser Werbespot eine filmgewordene Soziopathie ist („Corporate Psychopathy“). Die Geschichte der unfreiwilligen Namensgeberin des Konzerns beginnt jedenfalls vor mehr als 2.200 Jahren:
„Als Nike von Samothrake wird eine griechische Skulptur bezeichnet, die die Siegesgöttin Nike darstellt und sich heute im Louvre in Paris befindet. Sie wurde im Heiligtum der Kabiren auf der griechischen Insel Samothrake gefunden. Es wird angenommen, dass rhodische Bildhauer die Statue geschaffen haben. Ihre Datierung und die Entstehungsumstände werden kontrovers diskutiert. Eine weit verbreitete Erklärung bringt die Statue mit einem Seesieg der rhodischen Flotte im Rahmen des Römisch-Syrischen Krieges in Verbindung und datiert sie in die Jahre kurz nach 190 v. Auf der linke Seite sind Fotos aus dem Louvre zusammengestellt (bis auf eines halt), wo die Nike von Samothrake ausgestellt ist, darunter auch eine Tafel, die den „besten Winkel zum Betrachten der Skulptur“ vorschlägt (li. unt.)
Das große Foto auf der rechten Seite und eines in der oberen Reihe zeigen den aktuellen Aufstellungsort der lange Zeit heftigst umstrittenen „Nike von Linz“ auf einem Gebäude der dortigen Kunstuniversität. Ich kann mich noch gut an den ursprünglichen Aufstellungsort und an die Auseinandersetzungen im Jahr 1977 erinnern. Ein weiteres Beispiel in der Reihe „Kunst im öffentlichen Raum“ des Ewigen Archivs.
„Nike von Linz ist eine einst umstrittene Nachbildung der antiken Siegesgöttin Nike von Samothrake, die an der Kunstuniversität in Linz montiert ist. Bereits in den 1970ern zierte die Skulptur ein Gebäude der Kunstuniversität, sorgte für den größten Kunstskandal Oberösterreichs und wurde nach zwei Jahren entfernt . . .Nike von Linz wurde 1977 von der Architekten- und Künstlergruppe Haus-Rucker-Co im Rahmen des forum metall gefertigt, einem Projekt, das mittels Metallskulpturen im öffentlichen Raum Kultur und Industrie in Linz verbinden sollte. Insgesamt nahmen 14 internationale Künstler daran teil. . .“ (s. link)

Nike of Samothrace, of Linz, of Somewhere. Brussel / Bruxelles / Brüssel | BE; Linz | AT; Paris | FR; Samothrace | GR – 190 BC – 2024 (© PP – # 3221 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) A few days ago, my reality coach and long-time buddy Markus Hanzer told me about a commercial by the sporting goods company Nike (‘Winning isn’t for everyone | Am I a bad person?’), which I have just watched after completing this tableaux. I agree with him and some of the comments on youtube, where the spot already has 2 million+ views, that this commercial is sociopathy turned into a film (‘Corporate Psychopathy’). In any case, the story of the company’s involuntary namesake begins more than 2,200 years ago:
‘Nike of Samothrace is the name given to a Greek sculpture depicting Nike, the goddess of victory, which is now in the Louvre in Paris. It was found in the sanctuary of the Kabirs on the Greek island of Samothrace. It is assumed that Rhodian sculptors created the statue. Its dating and the circumstances of its creation are the subject of controversy. One widely accepted explanation associates the statue with a naval victory of the Rhodian fleet during the Roman-Syrian War and dates it to shortly after 190 BC. ‘ (see link)
On the left side are photos from the Louvre (except for one stop), where the Nike of Samothrace is exhibited, including a plaque suggesting the ‘best angle for viewing the sculpture’ (bottom left).
The large photo on the right and one in the top row show the current location of the long highly controversial ‘Nike of Linz’ on a building of the University of Art there. I can still remember the original location and the controversy in 1977. Another example in the Eternal Archive’s ‘Art in Public Space’ series.
‘Nike of Linz is a once controversial replica of the ancient goddess of victory Nike of Samothrace, which is installed at the University of Art in Linz. Back in the 1970s, the sculpture adorned a building at the University of Art, caused the biggest art scandal in Upper Austria and was removed two years later . . Nike von Linz was created in 1977 by the Haus-Rucker-Co group of architects and artists as part of forum metall, a project that aimed to connect culture and industry in Linz by means of metal sculptures in public spaces.
