Nachrichten aus Motörhead am See! Ein Land fernab von Zeit und Raum: Klimawandel? CO2 Fußabdruck? Was ist das bitte?? Nie gehört! Mann/Frau wird doch noch ein bisschen Spaß haben dürfen! Bike Week am Faakersee in Kärnten. Faak am See · 2023 (Screenshots © Kleine Zeitung · Tableau © PP · # 2927 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Die seit Jahren völlig aus der Zeit gefallene „European Bike Week“ (vormals: „Harley-Davidson-Treffen“) findet nach dem Willen der offiziell Verantwortlichen und der sogenannten Tourismus-Manager*innen nicht nur in diesem Jahr statt sondern soll auch vertraglich bis 2030 stattfinden! Ob ein solches Treffen in Zeiten des Klimawandels noch angemessen ist? Der Bürgermeister der Gemeinde Finkenstein, Christian Poglitsch (ÖVP), betonte jedoch, dass die Bevölkerung hinter der Veranstaltung steht. „Man kann es auch ein bisschen übertreiben. Ich denke, dieses Gefühl Harley zu fahren, das sollte man nicht hier den Menschen wegnehmen“, so Poglitsch. (Zitat ORF Kärnten, 7. Aug. 2023)
In diversen Artikeln wird von einer lokalen Wertschöpfung von 25 Mio. Euro ausgegangen.
Hier eine kleine Rechnung zur Kostenwahrheit – eine konservative Annahmen ohne An- und Abreise:
70.000 Motorradfahrer*innen sind sechs Tage in Kärnten, jeden zweiten Tag machen sie einen Ausflug von 90 km.
70.000 Motorradfahrer*innen x 90 km (entspricht etwa der Länge des Weges der Harleyparade von Samstag) x 3 Tage ->18.900.000 km
Eine Harley verbraucht im Schnitt 5,5 Liter Benzin/100km(*1) -> 1.039.500 Liter
1 Liter Benzin erzeugt 2,33 kg CO2(*2) -> 2.422.035 kg CO2, das sind rund 2.400 Tonnen CO2
Die volkswirtschaftlichen Kosten einer Tonne CO2 liegen bei 2.500 Euro(*3) -> 6.000.000 Euro
Bei dieser Rechnung ist noch nicht einbezogen, dass die Großveranstaltungen noch sehr viel Verkehr durch die Besucher*innen generieren!
Bei Kostenwahrheit und der damit einhergehenden Rechtfertigung für die Allgemeinheit, müsste jeder vierte Euro der kolportierten Wertschöpfung in die Kompensation der durch die Veranstaltung verursachten Emissionen investiert werden. Dieses Ergebnis, auf Basis der sehr konservativen Annahmen, sollte wachrütteln:
Es geht nicht darum „dieses Gefühl Harley zu fahren, das sollte man nicht hier den Menschen wegnehmen“ (Bürgermeister Poglitsch), es geht auch nicht um: Harleyfahrer*innen gegen die lokale Bevölkerung.
Es geht vielmehr darum, dass durch diese Veranstaltung Treibhausgase emittiert werden, die den Klimawandel befeuern und jährliche Großwetterereignisse den Lebensraum der Bevölkerung bedrohen bzw sogar zerstören, ohne dass entsprechend ausgeglichen wird – es geht somit um mehr als die Freiheit, es geht um die Lebensgrundlage.
Private Gewinne auf Kosten der Kompensation durch die Öffentliche Hand (4,8 Mio Euro für den Hochwasserschutz)? Es geht darum, dass die verantwortlichen Personen dieses Faktum miteinbeziehen und für das Gemeinwohl arbeiten.

Is such a meeting still appropriate in times of climate change? However, the mayor of the municipality of Finkenstein, Christian Poglitsch (ÖVP), emphasized that the population is behind the event. “You can also exaggerate it a bit. Various articles assume a local added value of 25 million euros.
Here is a small calculation of the true cost – a conservative assumption without arrival and departure:
70,000 motorcyclists are in Carinthia for six days, every other day they go on a 90 km trip.
70,000 motorcyclists x 90 km (corresponds roughly to the length of the route of the Harley parade on Saturday) x 3 days -> 18,900,000 km
A Harley consumes on average 5.5 liters of petrol/100km(*1) -> 1,039,500 liters
1 liter of gasoline produces 2.33 kg CO2(*2) -> 2,422,035 kg CO2, which is around 2,400 tons of CO2
The economic costs of one ton of CO2 are 2,500 euros (*3) -> 6,000,000 euros
This calculation does not take into account the fact that the major events still generate a lot of traffic from visitors!
If the costs are true and the associated justification for the general public, every fourth euro of the rumored added value would have to be invested in offsetting the emissions caused by the event. This result, based on very conservative assumptions, should be a wake-up call:
It’s not about “that feeling of riding a Harley, you shouldn’t take that away from people here” (Mayor Poglitsch), it’s also not about: Harley drivers against the local population.
Rather, it is about the fact that this event emits greenhouse gases that fuel climate change and annual major weather events threaten or even destroy the living space of the population without being compensated accordingly – it is about more than freedom, it is about the basis of life.
Private profits at the expense of compensation from the public sector (4.8 million euros for flood protection)? It is about the responsible persons taking this fact into account and working for the common good.
