Mara Mattuschka. Malerin, Filmemacherin, Schriftstellerin. Noch ein „Timelapse-Portrait“ und eine ordentliche Zeitverdichtung. Wien | AT · 1985–2022 (© PP · # 2530 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Die beiden Farbfotos habe ich vor 37 Jahren im Studio für experimentellen Animationsfilm von Maria Lassnig auf der Angewandten aufgenommen, die SW-Fotos vor einigen Wochen in ihrem Atelier. „Ich bin beim Malen nie allein. Das Bild spricht zu mir, stellt Forderungen, schneidet Grimassen so wie ich. Zuweilen lächelt es mich an, ich lächle zurück. Irgendwann beruhigt es sich, es wird seltsam still – dann denke ich, das Bild ist womöglich fertig. . .“ Mara Mattuschka ist Malerin, macht Filme, schreibt Theaterstücke und Romane. Ihre ersten Filme habe ich vor Jahrzehnten gesehen und fand sie sperrig, stark, nachhaltig, einprägsam Sie studierte Malerei auf der Angewandten bei Maria Lassnig, Animationsfilm im Studio für experimentellen Film ebenda, das Hubert Sielecki gegründet und viele Jahre geleitet hat.

Sie war Professorin für „Freie Kunst“ an der HBK Braunschweig und dort Kollegin von Birgit Hein und Marina Abramovic und Lehrbeauftragte an der Kunstuniversität Linz. Retrospektiven der Filme von Mara Mattuschka liefen u.a. im EYE-Filmmuseum Amsterdam, in Barcelona, London, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, in Wien, bei der Diagonale Graz, im Anthology Film Archives New York, in Tokyo und Rio de Janeiro. Im Oktober wird es eine Retrospektive ihrer Filme in Luzern (oder Lausanne?) geben, ein Drehbuch für einen weiteren Spielfilm ist fertig, ein Roman in Arbeit.

Soll ich jetzt schreiben: „Mara ist ein Phänomen?“ Nein – schreib ich natürlich nicht, aber: dass ich sie und ihre Arbeit ganz großartig finde, das möchte ich wieder einmal kundtun.

The picture speaks to me, makes demands, grimaces like me. Sometimes it smiles at me, I smile back. At some point it calms down, it becomes strangely quiet – then I think the picture might be finished. . .” Mara Mattuschka is a painter, makes films, writes plays and novels. I saw her first films decades ago and found them bulky, strong, enduring, memorable. She studied painting at the Applied University with Maria Lassnig, animation film in the studio for experimental film there, which Hubert Sielecki founded and managed for many years.
She was a professor for “Free Art” at the HBK Braunschweig, where she was a colleague of Birgit Hein and Marina Abramovic and lecturer at the University of Art and Design Linz. Retrospectives of Mara Mattuschka’s films have been shown at the EYE Film Museum in Amsterdam, in Barcelona, London, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, in Vienna, at the Diagonale Graz, in the Anthology Film Archives New York, in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro. There will be a retrospective of her films in Lucerne (or Lausanne?) in October, a screenplay for another feature film is finished, a novel is in the works.
Should I write now: “Mara is a phenomenon?” No – I won’t write, of course, but I would like to say once again that I find her and her work really great.
