Mann im Prater. Dedicated to Diane Arbus and GoAl Nowak. Wien | AT · 1973 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv). Keine Ahnung, wie ich den Mann vor fast 45 Jahren dazu gebracht habe, vor der Frau neben dem Flipperautomaten zu posieren. Sicher ist aber, dass ich damals schon Fotografien von Diane Arbus kannte, der US-amerikanischen Fotografin, die für mich „die Streetfotografin“ schlechthin ist und deren Arbeit mich nach wie vor beschäftigt. Fotos von ihr hatte mir erstmals mein BE-Lehrer GoAl (für: Gottfried-Alexander) Nowak im Gymnasium Bad Ischl gezeigt – einer der Menschen, denen ich durch ihre Begeisterung für ihre Sache viel zu verdanken habe. Er hatte gemeinsam mit Manfred Deix und Gottfried Helnwein (und vielleicht auch mit Kestutis Lapsys?) an der Akademie für bildende Kunst studiert und brachte damals frischen Wind an die Schule. Originale von Diane Arbus, von Les Krims, Weegee, Minor White und anderen konnte ich damals in der Fotogalerie in der Bäckerstraße sehen, gegründet von Anna Auer (die später die „Sammlung Fotografis“ der Länderbank aufbaute, die meines Wissens dann in der Albertina gelandet ist) und ihrem Partner. Die Galerie in der Bäckerstraße und die Länderbank gibt es schon lange nicht mehr – die Arbeiten der Fotograf*innen „leben“ weiter.

No idea how I made the man almost 45 years ago to pose in front of the woman next to the pinball machine. What is certain, though, is that I already knew photographs of Diane Arbus, the American photographer who is “the street photographer” par excellence for me, and whose work still occupies me. My BE teacher GoAl (for: Gottfried-Alexander) Nowak showed me photos of her for the first time in the Gymnasium Bad Ischl – one of the people to whom I owe much thanks for her enthusiasm for her cause. He had studied with Manfred Deix and Gottfried Helnwein (and perhaps also with Kestutis Lapsys?) At the Academy of Fine Arts and brought fresh wind to the school. At that time I was able to see originals by Diane Arbus, Les Krims, Weegee, Minor White and others in the photo gallery on Bäckerstraße, founded by Anna Auer (who later built the “Länderbank” “Sammlung Fotografis”, which, to my knowledge, landed in the Albertina is) and her partner. The gallery in Bäckerstraße and the Länderbank have long since ceased to exist – the work of the photographers “lives on”.
