Making of Irene Andessners „Wanda SM“

Making of „Wanda SM“ im Kunsthistorischen – ein Fitness-Studio der etwas anderen Art. Wien | AT · 2002 (Performance und Artwork: © Irene Andessner; Dokumentationsfotos und Tableau © PP · Ewiges Archiv) Die Künstlerin Irene Andessner hatte für „Graz 2003 – Kulturhauptstadt Europas“ den Auftrag bekommen, ihr groß angelegtes Projekt „Wanda SM – eine Hommage an Wanda von Sacher-Masoch“ zu realisieren. Mein damaliges Studio in der Liechtensteinstraße war für rund 2 Jahre Projektzentrale, gemeinsam mit Florian Rutter war ich für Organisation und Realisierung verantwortlich. Im Projekt sollte in künstlerisch überhöhtem Sinne Angelica Aurora Rümelin (1845 – 1908), die Ehefrau von Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836 – 1895) personifiziert werden, die für den Schriftsteller die Rolle der dominanten Wanda von Dunajew aus seinem Roman „Venus im Pelz“ (1869) verkörperte. Ein Leben, das Irene Andessner bildnerisch nachvollzog.

Ein Abschnitt des sehr umfangreich und aufwändig angelegten Projektes wurde auch im KHM realisiert: Dafür wurde das Gemälde von Tizian „Mädchen im Pelz“ von Spezialisten umgehängt, der Restaurator Michael Odlozil war aus restauratorischer Sicht für das Umfeld – insbesondere nicht zu starkes/direktes Licht auf die Bilder zuständig. Im Tizian-Saal des KHM thronte Irene Andessner in meterlangen Zobel-Kunstpelz gehüllt in einem massiven Fauteuil auf einem Podest, Tizians Bild hinter sich, Zofen und Kämmerer um sie herum, ein „Sklave“ zu ihren Füßen. Männer, die sich im Vorfeld bereit erklärt hatten, mitzuwirken, wurden vom kleinwüchsigen Burgtheater-Schauspieler Hackl einzeln in den Saal geführt und angekündigt. Ihnen wurde eine Polaroid-Kamera übergeben, sie mussten sich auf ein Fitness-Gerät legen, nach Vorgabe diverse Übungen ausführen, wurden dabei von Irene Andessner fotografiert, mussten ein Polaroid-Foto aufnehmen und dieses der Künstlerin übergeben. Die gesamte Aktion wurde mit zahlreichen Video- und Still-Kameras dokumentiert.

Kurz vor Beginn der seit Monaten minutiös vorbereiteten Aktion, die an einem Schließtag des KHM stattfand, wurde ich ins Büro zum damaligen Generaldirektors Seipel zitiert – er hatte von seiner der Pressereferentin (angeblich) erst kurz vorher erfahren, dass die ganze Performance ins Netz gestreamt werden sollte und drohte empört damit, die gegebene Zusage zurückzuziehen. Ich gab also den völlig zerknirschten Idioten: „Alles meine Schuld – selbstverständlich sagen wir alles augenblicklich ab – ich muss dann selbstverständlich alle Eingeladenen, die ihr Kommen zugesagt hatten, wieder ausladen, also Prof. Rudolf Leopold, Dr. Helga Rabl-Stadler, Präsidentin der Salzburger Festspiele und zahlreiche andere Persönlichkeiten aus der Kunst- und Kultur-Szene“. Damit war das Thema augenblicklich vom Tisch – diese PR wollte sich Dir. Seipel nicht entgehen lassen – die Performance konnte beginnen ;-)

Für mich ein Projekttag am Rande des Nervenzusammenbruchs – am Abend war ich nur noch froh, dass die Produktion ohne Schäden an den kostbaren Exponaten etc. durchgeführt werden konnte. Im großartigen Team ua. Thomas Holzinger, Raphael Frick und mein damaliger Webmaster Bob Bojkov, die die Veranstaltung ins Netz streamten, an den Kameras Oliver Kunz und Irmin Kerck (Steadycam).

Vienna | AT · 2002 (Performance and Artwork: © Irene Andessner, Documentation Photos and Tableau © PP · Eternal Archives) The artist Irene Andessner had been commissioned for “Graz 2003 – European Capital of Culture”, her large-scale project “Wanda SM – a tribute to Wanda by Sacher-Masoch “. My then studio in Liechtensteinstraße was the project headquarters for about 2 years, together with Florian Rutter I was responsible for organization and realization. Angelica Aurora Rümelin (1845 – 1908), the wife of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836 – 1895), was to be personified in an artistically exaggerated sense, claiming to be the writer of the dominant Wanda von Dunajew from his novel “Venus in Fur “(1869) embodied. A life that Irene Andessner understood artistically.
A section of the very extensive and elaborate project was also realized in the KHM: For the painting by Titian “Girl in the Fur” was umgehängt by specialists, the restorer Michael Odlozil was from a restorative point of view for the environment – especially not too strong / direct light the pictures in charge. In the Tizian room of the KHM, Irene Andessner was enthroned in meter-long sable faux fur in a massive armchair on a pedestal, Titian’s picture behind her, maids and chamberlains around her, a “slave” at her feet. Men who had agreed in advance to participate, were guided by the short Burgtheater actor Hackl individually in the hall and announced. They were given a Polaroid camera, they had to lie down on a fitness device, perform various exercises as instructed, were photographed by Irene Andessner, had to take a Polaroid photo and hand it over to the artist. The entire action was documented with numerous video and still cameras.
Shortly before the start of months of meticulously prepared action, which took place on a closing day of the KHM, I was summoned to the office of the then Director-General Seipel – he had (of the press officer) (allegedly) only recently learned that the whole performance will be streamed into the net should and was outraged threatening to withdraw the given pledge. So I gave the completely contrite idiots: “All my fault – of course we say everything instantly – then I have to unload of course all the invitees who had promised to come, so Prof. Rudolf Leopold, Dr. med. Helga Rabl-Stadler, President of the Salzburg Festival and numerous other personalities from the art and culture scene “. Thus, the topic was immediately off the table – this PR did not want to miss you Seipel – the performance could begin 😉
For me a project day on the verge of nervous breakdown – in the evening I was only glad that the production could be carried out without damage to the precious exhibits etc. In the great team and others.
