Lockdown Portraits: The Moment of Truth. Wien | AT · 2021 (© SW-Portrait: René Huemer; © PP · Ewiges Archiv) René Huemer (li. ob.) ist „Tour Photographer“ – vor der „Pandemic“ reiste er viele Jahre je mehrere Monate lang mit US-Bands durch die Lande, mit der „Dave Matthews Band“ und mit „Phish“, als „embedded Photographer“ sozusagen. Wenn er nicht im Tourbus saß, beschäftigte er sich intensiv mit Kollodium-Fotografie, einer historischen Fototechnik. Sehr vereinfacht ausgedrückt, wird eine Metallplatte mit einer lichtempfindlichen Emulsion in der Dunkelkammer beschichtet bzw. übergossen, kurz antrocknen lassen und noch feucht (daher „Kollodium Nassplatte“) in einer Großformat-Kamera belichtet. Nach der Belichtung wird sofort entwickelt, wobei sich das Foto in gewissem Sinne vom Negativ ins Positiv umkehrt. Es ist jedenfalls eine Fotografie ohne Negativ, vergleichbar mit der Daguerreotypie.

In Ermangelung glamouröserer Models bat er mich gestern, mich für ein Probefoto vor seine Kamera zu setzen. Ich „poste“ das Portrait zum einen aus purer Eitelkeit – ich finds großartig natürlich – zum anderen ist es für mich wirklich eine „Stunde der Wahrheit“: Ich finde, ich schaue dem (von mir besonders geschätzten) Filmregisseur Werner Herzog ähnlich – und die Augen!! Hatte nicht auch David Bowie zwei unterschiedliche Augenfarben? ;-)

When he was not in the tour bus, he worked intensively on collodion photography, a historical photographic technique. In very simple terms, a metal plate is coated or poured over with a light-sensitive emulsion in the darkroom, allowed to dry briefly and exposed while still moist (hence “collodion wet plate”) in a large format camera. After exposure, development takes place immediately, with the photo reversing from negative to positive in a certain sense. In any case, it is a photograph without a negative, comparable to the daguerreotype. In the absence of more glamorous models, he asked me yesterday to sit in front of his camera for a test photo. On the one hand, I “post” the portrait out of sheer vanity – I think it’s great, of course – on the other hand, it really is an “hour of truth” for me: I think I look similar to the film director Werner Herzog (whom I particularly appreciate) – and the Eyes!! Didn’t David Bowie also have two different eye colors? 😉
