Wien | AT · 2014–2022 (© PP · # 2547 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Der hervorragende Zeichner und ehemalige Kunsterzieher hat sich lieber zeichnen als fotografieren lassen, öfter hat er mir verboten, ihn zu fotografieren, aber auch beim Abschied einen Gutschein geschrieben, dass ich das bei einem der nächsten Male machen dürfe. Ich vermisse ihn sehr und freue mich darüber, dass zumindest viele Zeichnungen geblieben sind: Wie haben einander oft gezeichnet. Jemanden portraitieren heißt zumindest, sich auf den/die Andere(n) einzulassen, sich anzuschauen. Das große Portrait rechts entstand, als ich 2020 im Krankenhaus lag – er hatte anstelle einer Maske ein Tuch umgebunden – sein Portrait von mir (rechts unten) ist das letzte, das er von mir gezeichnet hat. Kestutis ist leider 2021 verstorben. Auf dem Erinnerungsblatt stand:
Die Ohnmacht der Ausschließlichkeit,
die der Tod hinterlässt,
trägt uns unser Leben lang.
Die Ausschließlichkeit der Liebe
trägt uns in die Unendlichkeit.
Wir werden dich nie vergessen.
Kestutis Lapsys (1947–2021)
Diesen kurzen Text habe ich als Nachruf verfasst:
Die Stimme des Kestutis Lapsys war so beruhigend, angenehm und sanft, dass ich einmal, auf der Couch liegend, er am Kopfende sitzend, eingeschlafen bin während er erzählte, was ihn in der Folge so ärgerte, dass er kurz darauf konsterniert abzog. Kennengelernt habe ich Kestutis im Jahr 1991, nachdem sein enger Freund und Kunsterzieher-Kollege, der Maler Wolfgang Egger verstorben war. Mit Wolfgang hatte ich 1977/78 ein Auslandstudien-Jahr in Poznan/Polen verbracht, Kestutis kümmerte sich um den Nachlass, einige Zeit später arbeiteten wir an einem Katalog mit den hinterlassenen Arbeiten des Künstlers und freundeten uns an. Er erzählte mir immer wieder von seiner über seine Kindheit in einem Lager für „Expatriats“ am Rande von Kufstein, in dem er mit seinen Eltern, die aus Litauen vor den Nazis geflüchtet waren, aufgewachsen war. Ich bedaure sehr, dass ich kein Video aufgenommen habe mit ihm, mit Ausnahme eines ganz kurzen, nur 27 Sekunden langen Videos: Kestutis Lapsys zeichnete 2014 ohne Vorlage – nur aus dem Gedächtnis – das Pokémon PANTIMOS und sprach über das Zeichnen. Mein Sohn – damals Pokémon begeistert – hatte Geburtstag und Kestutis entschloss sich spontan, auf eine Landkarte, die ich 1978 aus Polen mitgebracht hatte, PANTIMOS („immer putzen“) zu zeichnen. Kestutis hatte ebenfalls eine Vorliebe für Pokémons und eine so große Sammlung von Pokémon-Paraphernalia, dass die Bezirks-Zeitung einen Artikel dazu veröffentlichte! Das Video ist zwar kurz, umfasst aber einige wesentliche Aspekte von Kestutis: seine Art zu reden, seine Stimme, seine ganz spezielle Kleidung, seine Ketten, Ringe und Amulette – er war in bestem Sinne ein „very special character“. Ein Kunsterzieher in bestem Sinne, beliebter Professor, Künstler, ein großartiger Zeichner – mit Bleistift und Smartphone gleichermaßen, ein wunderbarer Erzähler und lieber Freund.
Im Jahr 2011 stellten wir eine Katalog mit Arbeiten von Kestutis aus früheren Jahren zusammen. Auf meinen Vorschlag hin schrieb er alle Texte, inklusive seiner Biographie mit der Hand. In der Folge übergab er mir Scans vieler seiner Arbeiten und bat mich, sie in die Datenbank meines Projektes „Das Ewige Archiv“ aufzunehmen und zu bewahren. Ein neuer Katalog mit den Arbeiten von Kestutis ist bereits in Arbeit.
Dies ist einer der Gründe, warum ich diesen Katalog nun veröffentliche, kurz nach dem Ableben von Kestutis am 16. März 2021. Diese Publikation beinhaltet Teile des Kataloges aus 2011 und neuere Arbeiten. Kestutis entwickelte eine Meisterschaft, mit einem Stift direkt am Display seines Smartphones zu zeichnen. Für seine nächtlichen Ausflüge und die dabei entstehenden Arbeiten verwendete er oft den Titel „nighty night“ – daher auch der Titel dieser Broschüre!

Vienna | AT 2014–2022 (© PP # 2547 www.ewigesarchiv.at) The excellent draftsman and former art teacher preferred to be drawn than photographed, he often forbade me to photograph him, but also wrote a voucher when saying goodbye, that I may do that next time. I miss him a lot and am happy that at least a lot of the drawings have remained: we often drew each other. At the very least, portraying someone means getting involved with the other(s), looking at yourself. The large portrait on the right was created when I was in the hospital in 2020 – instead of a mask he had tied on a cloth – his portrait of me (bottom right) is the last he drew of me. Unfortunately, Kestutis passed away in 2021. The reminder sheet read:
the impotence of exclusivity,
that death leaves behind
carries us throughout our lives.
The exclusiveness of love
takes us to infinity.
We will never forget you.
Kestutis Lapsys (1947–2021)
I wrote this short text as an obituary:
The voice of Kestutis Lapsys was so soothing, pleasant and gentle that I once, lying on the couch with him sitting at the head end, fell asleep while he was talking, which subsequently annoyed him so much that he left in consternation shortly afterwards. I got to know Kestutis in 1991 after his close friend and fellow art teacher, the painter Wolfgang Egger, passed away. I spent a year studying abroad with Wolfgang in Poznan/Poland in 1977/78, Kestutis took care of the estate, some time later we worked on a catalog with the artist’s works and became friends. He kept telling me about his childhood in an “expatriate” camp on the outskirts of Kufstein, where he grew up with his parents, who had fled Lithuania from the Nazis. I really regret that I didn’t record a video with him, except for a very short video, only 27 seconds long: Kestutis Lapsys drew the Pokémon PANTIMOS in 2014 without a template – only from memory – and talked about drawing. It was my son’s birthday – who loved Pokémon at the time – and Kestutis spontaneously decided to draw PANTIMOS (“always cleaning”) on a map I had brought from Poland in 1978. Kestutis also had a fondness for Pokémon and had such a large collection of Pokémon paraphernalia that the local newspaper published an article about it! Although the video is short, it covers some essential aspects of Kestutis: his way of speaking, his voice, his very special clothes, his necklaces, rings and amulets – he was a „very special character“ in the best sense of the word. An art teacher in the best sense, a popular professor, artist, a great draftsman – with pencil and smartphone alike, a wonderful storyteller and dear friend.
In 2011 we compiled a catalog of Kestutis‘ work from previous years. At my suggestion he wrote all the lyrics, including his biography, by hand. As a result, he gave me scans of many of his works and asked me to include them in the database of my project „The Eternal Archive“ and preserve them. A new catalog of Kestutis‘ work is already in the works.
This is one of the reasons I am releasing this catalog now, shortly after Kestutis passed away on March 16, 2021. This publication includes parts of the 2011 catalog and more recent work. Kestutis developed a mastery of drawing with a pen directly on the display of his smartphone. He often used the title “nighty night” for his nocturnal excursions and the resulting works – hence the title of this brochure!
