In der Nikon Autofokusfalle. Wien | AT · 2023 (© Michael Schuster © PP · # 2773 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Kurz vor der Eröffnung der Ausstellung On Stage im mumok - Museum moderner Kunst Wien, kamen Karola Kraus, die Direktorin des Museums und Cornelia Lamprechter, wirtschaftliche Geschäftsführerin des mumok mit einem Fotografen in die Installation „Nikon Autofokusfalle“ von Michael Schuster. Ich kannte diese Arbeit, fand es interessant bzw amüsant, dass genau dieses Werk als Setting für Pressefotos gewählt wurde und konnte nicht widerstehen, die Situation zu dokumentieren. Gegen Ende der Aufnahmen bemerkte mich eine Mitarbeiterin (unten, 2. Foto) und der Fotograf fotografierte mich (gr. Foto re.) Ich war selbst in seine Autofokusfalle geraten. Vielleicht gelingt es mir, dieses Tableau gegen seinen „Gegenschuss“ zu tauschen.

„Eine Kamera auf einem Sockel steht vor einem Foto. Das Foto der Kamera ist genau so groß, dass es den Sucher der Kamera ausfüllt. Die Größe des Fotos ergibt sich aus der Entfernung der Kamera zum Bild. Die Kamera, mit einer Datenrückwand auf Autofokusfalle programmiert, löst dann aus, wenn sich jemand in einer bestimmten, vorher eingestellten Entfernung zu ihr befindet.“ (mumok)

ON STAGE – Kunst als Bühne

Die Ausstellung widmet sich den variantenreichen Formen des Bühnenhaften und des Rollenspiels in der Kunst seit den 1960er-Jahren. Im Kontext einer traditionskritischen Neoavantgarde kamen damals verstärkt performative und aktionistische Kunstformen auf, die den Künstler*innen – oft vor versammeltem Publikum – bühnenartige Präsenz verliehen.

I knew this work, found it interesting and amusing that exactly this work was chosen as the setting for press photos and I couldn’t resist documenting the situation. Towards the end of the recording, an employee noticed me (below, 2nd photo) and the photographer took a picture of me (large photo, right). I had fallen into his autofocus trap myself. Maybe I’ll succeed in exchanging this tableau for his “reverse shot”.

“A camera on a pedestal stands in front of a photo. The camera’s photo is just the right size to fill the camera’s viewfinder. The size of the photo results from the distance from the camera to the picture. The camera, programmed with a data back to an autofocus trap, is triggered when someone is within a certain, previously set distance from it.” (mumok)

ON STAGE – art as a stage
The exhibition is dedicated to the varied forms of theatrical and role-playing in art since the 1960s. In the context of a tradition-critical neo-avant-garde, performative and actionist art forms increasingly emerged at the time, which gave the artists a stage-like presence – often in front of an assembled audience.
