Im österreichischen Kulturinstitut in Rom. Ist Erinnern völlig von gestern? Roma | IT · 2003 (© PP · # 3590 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Vor mittlerweile zweiundzwanzig Jahren war ich eingeladen worden, bei „animaction“, einem Filmfestival in Rom, einige meiner Animationsfilme zu zeigen. Empfohlen hatte mich der Filmemacher Pierre Hebert, den ich 1988 in Montréal kennengelernt hatte, im Programm waren ua. Filme von ihm selbst, vom Neuseeländer Len Lye (Free Radicals) und von Lotte Reininger. Besonders freute ich mich, als mir bei der Ankunft in Rom die Veranstalter das Plakat und das Programmheft zeigten, auf denen ein Filmstill aus meinem Film „Mont Real“ abgebildet war – ich selbst nackt mit einer Maske mit umgehängter Blinklichterkette und dem Text „THEY STOLE MY EYES“ (Detail des Plakates links oben). Die Vorführungen fanden in einem kleinen, wunderbaren Holzgebäude mitten in einem Park in Rom statt, im Cinema dei Piccoli, dem Kino der Kleinen. Es war insgesamt großartig und ich denke gerne an die paar Tage zurück, an die Treffen mit anderen Filmemachern, mit den freundlichen Gastgeber*innen, an gemeinsame Essen, an Stadtspaziergänge. Bei einem Tauchgang in die Tiefen der Bild-Datenbank des Ewigen Archivs bin ich absichtslos in die Kaverne mit den damals aufgenommenen Fotos hineingeschwebt und entschloss mich, eine, bzw. diese Zusammenstellung mit Aufnahmen des österreichischen Kulturinstitutes, im Forum Austriaco di Cultura Roma, zu fertigen, in dem ich damals zu Gast war. Das große Foto links zeigt mich bzw. mein linkes Bein im repräsentativen Aufenthaltsbereich des Institutes, das Foto rechts das Zimmer, in dem ich nächtigen konnte. Es scheint kurz vor der Abreise aufgenommen worden zu sein, das Bett bereits abgezogen, darauf ein Plastiksack mit gekauften Büchern, am Stuhl meine Laptop-Tasche mit dem türkisfarbenen „Apple iBook Clamshell“ – das vor 25 Jahren vorgestellt wurde und heute ein Stück für Computer-Museen ist. Was mich bereits zur Frage bringt, ob Erinnern von gestern ist. Ich könnte vermutlich jede beliebige KI-Software anwerfen und eine präzisere Darstellung der Zeit im Jahr 2003 in Sekunden bekommen, als ich selbst sie mühselig zusammenstückeln könnte. Wozu erinnern, wozu meine Gehirn-Weichplatte bemühen? Für die Zusammenstellung dieses Tableaus und diese paar Zeilen habe ich nun fast zwei Stunden gebraucht. Was bedeutet überhaupt Erinnern, wenn ich in einer Welt lebe, in der ich nur mehr Ereignisse konstatieren, den Vorgängen mit offenem Mund zuschauen kann und in der ich irgendwie irgendetwas nachhechle?

Roma | IT · 2003 (© PP · # 3590 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Twenty-two years ago, I was invited to show some of my animated films at ‘animaction’, a film festival in Rome. I had been recommended by the filmmaker Pierre Hebert, whom I had met in Montréal in 1988. The programme included films by himself, by the New Zealander Len Lye (Free Radicals) and by Lotte Reininger. I was particularly delighted when, upon my arrival in Rome, the organisers showed me the poster and programme booklet featuring a still from my film Mont Real – myself naked, wearing a mask with a string of flashing lights around my neck and the text ‘THEY STOLE MY EYES’ (detail of the poster at top left). The screenings took place in a small, wonderful wooden building in the middle of a park in Rome, at the Cinema dei Piccoli, the cinema for children. It was a wonderful experience overall, and I fondly remember those few days, meeting other filmmakers, the friendly hosts, shared meals, and walks around the city. While diving into the depths of the Eternal Archive’s image database, I unintentionally floated into the cavern containing the photos taken at that time and decided to create a compilation of photos taken at the Austrian Cultural Institute, the Forum Austriaco di Cultura Roma, where I was a guest at the time. The large photo on the left shows me, or rather my left leg, in the institute’s representative lounge area, while the photo on the right shows the room where I stayed. It seems to have been taken shortly before my departure, the bed already stripped, a plastic bag with purchased books on it, my laptop bag with the turquoise ‘Apple iBook Clamshell’ on the chair – which was introduced 25 years ago and is now a piece for computer museums. Which brings me to the question of whether remembering is a thing of the past. I could probably fire up any AI software and get a more accurate picture of the year 2003 in seconds than I could painstakingly piece together myself. Why remember, why strain my brain? It took me almost two hours to compile this tableau and these few lines. What does remembering even mean when I live in a world where I can only observe events, watch proceedings with my mouth agape, and somehow chase after something?
