I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream. Es schmilzt dann doch alles so schnell dahin. Trieste | IT; Wien | AT · 2011–2023 (Gelati-close-ups © Sonja Gasparin · © PP · # 2938 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Als Kind in Langwies das Vanille-Erdbeer-Eis in den kleinen Pappbechern, auf deren Deckeln ein kleiner Plastiklöffel aufgeklebt war, solange geschabt und gerührt, bis das Eis cremig war und erst dann gegessen. Ab und zu die „Wassereis“-Schlecker um einen Schilling. In Ebensee beim Kiosk am Landungsplatz zugeschaut, wie aus der Eismaschine das durch eine zackenförmige Tülle geformte, herausgepresste Eis dann elegant auf die Eistüte aufgelassen wurde. Wenn ich in den vergangenen Jahren – selten – ein Eis geschleckt habe, dachte ich mir immer wieder, wie schnell doch das Eis, das einige Euros gekostet hatte, weg ist und wie ich mir immer wieder überlege, ob ich einem Bettler jetzt ein oder doch zwei Euros geben soll.

Im Jahr 2020 habe ich einem Eis-Tableau folgenden Text zur Arktis beigestellt: „In der Arktis hat es im Sommer noch nie da gewesene Waldbrände gegeben, Hitze, Trockenheit und zerbrochene Eisschelfe. Das Meereis im Nordpolarmeer schrumpfte auf ein Minimum. Die Entwicklungen betreffen auch die mittleren Breiten über kurz oder lang, denn was in der Arktis passiert, bleibt nicht in der Arktis. . . Vom größten noch verbliebenen Eisschelf der Arktis in Grönland brachen im August rund 110 Quadratkilometer ab, auch das größte noch intakte Eisschelf in Kanada gibt es in seiner ursprünglichen Form nicht mehr. Ende Juli verlor das 4.000 Jahre alte Milne-Eisschelf auf Ellesmere Island 80 Quadratkilometer bzw. 43 Prozent seiner Fläche. Die Spirale dreht sich immer schneller. Die Arktis erwärmt sich weit stärker als andere Teile der Erde, in den vergangenen 40 Jahren stiegen die Temperaturen im hohen Norden dreimal so stark wie im globalen Durchschnitt. Der weltweite Temperaturanstieg wird vom Albedo-Effekt überlagert und noch verstärkt. . . .“ (orf.at)

Every now and then the “water ice cream” lickers for a shilling. In Ebensee, at the kiosk at the landing site, we watched as the ice cream, which was pressed out of the ice cream machine through a jagged spout, was then elegantly poured onto the ice cream cone. Over the past few years, when I’ve licked an ice cream – rarely – I’ve always thought to myself how quickly the ice cream, which had cost a few euros, is gone and how I keep thinking about whether I’m going to help a beggar or not should give two euros.
In 2020, I included the following text on the Arctic with an ice tableau: “The Arctic has seen unprecedented summer forest fires, heat, drought and broken ice shelves. The sea ice in the Arctic Ocean shrank to a minimum. The developments will also affect the middle latitudes sooner or later, because what happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic. . . Around 110 square kilometers of the largest remaining ice shelf in the Arctic in Greenland broke off in August, and the largest intact ice shelf in Canada no longer exists in its original form. At the end of July, the 4,000-year-old Milne Ice Shelf on Ellesmere Island lost 80 square kilometers, or 43 percent, of its area. The spiral is turning faster and faster. The Arctic is warming far more than other parts of the world; in the past 40 years, temperatures in the far north have risen three times the global average.
