Gerhard Lang und das Phantombild-Gerät „Minolta Unit“. Flashback in eine Zeit vor Photoshop und KI-generierten Bildern. Wien | AT · 2018 (Phantombilder © G. Lang; © PP · # 2649 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Bei der Ausstellung „Landschaft = Labor“ von Herwig Turk im Museum moderner Kunst Kärnten 2016 lernte ich Gerhard Lang kennen, der dort auf Einladung des Ausstellenden mit dem Video „Through the Looking Glass II“ vertreten war, in dem er zu sehen war, wie er rückwärts durch eine Stadt ging, sich an einer in den Händen hoch gehaltenen optischen Linse orientierend. Zwei Jahre später besuchte ich ihn während seines Aufenthaltes in einem Atelier im MQ – MuseumsQuartier Wien, wo er mir seine Arbeit mit einem Phantombild-Gerät zeigte: Seine erste Arbeit damit, die „Paleanthropische Physiognomie“ entstand 1992 im Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) Wiesbaden. Im Jahr 1997 konnte er ein Gerät selbst vom BKA erwerben. Die „Minolta Unit“ war ursprünglich für die Identifizierung von Opfern des Atombombenabwurfes über Hiroshima entwickelt worden und in Folge von Polizeistellen zur Anfertigung von „Phantomfotos“ nach Zeugenbeschreibungen im Einsatz. In mehrere Einschubfächer können SW-Vorlagen eingelegt werden, die durch ein komplexes System von Spiegeln und Linsen aus unterschiedlichen Kopfformen, Augen, Nasen, Mündern etc. ein Komposit-Bild ergeben, das dann reproduziert und an Polizeistellen und Medien weitergeleitet bzw. veröffentlicht werden kann – bzw. konnte. Gerhard Lang allerdings kombiniert eigene Portraitfotos – zB seiner Familie oder von sich selbst, mit Insektenaugen, Tierdetails und anderen Fragmenten.

Lang; © PP # 2649 www.ewigesarchiv.at) At the exhibition “Landschaft = Labor” by Herwig Turk in the Museum of Modern Art in Carinthia in 2016, I met Gerhard Lang, who was there at the invitation of the Exhibitors featured the video Through the Looking Glass II, in which he was seen walking backwards through a city, using an optical lens held up in his hands as a guide. Two years later I visited him during his stay in a studio in the MQ – MuseumsQuartier Wien, where he showed me his work with an identikit device: His first work with it, the “Paleanthropic Physiognomy” was created in 1992 in the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) Wiesbaden. In 1997 he was able to purchase a device himself from the BKA. The “Minolta Unit” was originally developed to identify victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and was subsequently used by police stations to take “phantom photos” based on witness descriptions. SW templates can be inserted into several slots, which result in a composite image through a complex system of mirrors and lenses from different head shapes, eyes, noses, mouths, etc., which can then be reproduced and forwarded to police stations and the media or published – or could. However, Gerhard Lang combines his own portrait photos – eg of his family or himself, with insect eyes, animal details and other fragments.
