Wien | AT · 1983 (© PP · # 3830 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Erst heute, beim Zusammenstellen dieses Tableaus, habe ich bemerkt, dass ich diese Aufnahmen (eine Serie von acht) im gleichen Jahr 1983 machte, in der der österreichische Schriftsteller Erich Fried sein wohl berühmtestes Gedicht „Was es ist“ veröffentlicht hat. Diese Fotografien sind für mich persönlich deshalb von Bedeutung, weil sie – für mich jedenfalls – schlicht und einfach zeigen: Was es ist. Ich kann mich an die Momente der Aufnahme sehr gut erinnern – den Naschmarkt, Situationen am Naschmarkt fotografierte ich, seit ich in Wien 1972 zu studieren begonnen hatte. An diesem Samstag fiel mir ein kleiner Verkaufs-Stand bei der Kettenbrückengasse auf, gleich neben dem Marktamts-Gebäude. Ein Mann holte die Fische mit einem Kescher aus dem Bottich und schlug sie mit einem Holzknüppel ab („einen Fisch abschlagen“ – sie hieß das jedenfalls bei uns in OÖ), zwei Männer zerlegten die Fische routiniert. Die Fotos zeigen nichts anderes als: Was es ist.

Vienna | AT · 1983 (© PP · # 3830 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) It was only today, whilst putting this tableau together, that I realised I took these photographs (a series of eight) in 1983 – the very same year that the Austrian writer Erich Fried published what is probably his most famous poem, ‘Was es ist’. These photographs are personally significant to me because they – for me, at least – simply and plainly show: what it is. I can remember the moments when I took the photos very clearly – the Naschmarkt; I’d been photographing scenes at the Naschmarkt ever since I began studying in Vienna in 1972. On that Saturday, a small stall on Kettenbrückengasse caught my eye, right next to the Marktamt building. A man was scooping the fish out of the tub with a landing net and killing them with a wooden club (‘killing a fish’ – that’s what we called it back in Upper Austria, anyway), whilst two men expertly filleted the fish. The photos show nothing other than: what it is.
