„First Nations“ formerly known as „Indianer“ – entzerrt. Cinemascope Found Footage_01. NN · 19XX–2023 (© NN · Tableau © PP · # 3015 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Ich bin aufgewachsen mit Winnetou und Old Shatterhand, Nscho-Tschi, der Silberbüchse (sic!), den Gesprächen am Lagerfeuer, Gold-Nuggets, dem Bösewicht Santer – alles vom Deutschen Schriftsteller Karl May geschrieben. Konnte nicht genug bekommen von seinen Büchern. Damals gabs Indianer und Indianerinnen, Weiße und Schwarze. Im Grunde habe ich erst, als ich 1988 nach Montréal als artist in residence kam, wirklich Kontakt zu „echten Indianern“ bekommen – nur gab’s die dort nicht – dort hörte ich wenige Tage nach meiner Ankunft bei einem Festival erstmals den Begriff „Autochthones“ – in etwa: die, die eine eigene Sprache haben – und auch die Namen der jeweiligen „Stämme“. Der Begrifff, der seit einiger Zeit verwendet wird, ist: „First Nations“. Also die, die schon lange, bevor Amerika „entdeckt“ wurde, im Land lebten.

Dass die muskulösen Herren mit nacktem Oberkörper, schulterlangem Haar und Kopfband etwas schmal in der Landschaft stehen, ist nicht einem bescheidenen digitalen Effekt des Archivars zu verdanken: Vor einiger Zeit habe ich zwei 35 mm breite Abschnitte eines Cinemascope-Kinofilms gefunden – wo, weiß ich nicht mehr. Im Zuge meiner schon lange andauernden Bemühungen, meine Anhäufungen von Fotos und Negativen zu sichten, zu ordnen und in beschriftete Archivboxen zu verstauen, habe ich wieder einmal in die mit „Gefundene Negative und Filme“ beschriftete Schachtel geschaut und beim genaueren Betrachten Szenen eines „Westerns“, möglicherweise eines „Italo-Westerns“ entdeckt. Dass die Filmstreifen stückweise gescannt werden konnten, dafür danke ich cyberlab.at herzlich. Die braunen Streifen mit den weißen unregelmäßigen Linien und Verformungen links vom Bild sind die optische Tonspur des Films.

Für dieses Tableau habe ich links den Scan des Filmstreifens belesen, daneben sind zwei Filmkader („frames“) des Streifens entzerrt.

In the course of my long-running efforts to sift through my accumulations of photos and negatives, organise them and stow them away in labelled archive boxes, I once again looked into the box labelled “Found negatives and films” and on closer inspection discovered scenes from a “Western”, possibly an “Italo-Western”. I would like to thank cyberlab.at for the fact that the film strips could be scanned piece by piece. The brown strips with the white irregular lines and deformations to the left of the image are the optical soundtrack of the film.
For this tableau I have read the scan of the film strip on the left, next to it two film frames of the strip are rectified.
