EXOTIC KING. Wie eins zum andern führt und doch kein Ganzes bildet. Wien | AT · 2008–2013 (© PP · # 2565 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) „Eine Datenbank ist schön, macht aber viel Arbeit“ (frei nach Karl Valentin). Die Datenbank des Ewigen Archivs mit etwa 500.000 Bilddateien will gepflegt und neue Fotos müssen „eingepflegt“ werden. Letzteres ist der Terminus unter Archivar*innen und meint den mühseligsten Teil: jedes Foto muss beschlagwortet werden, sonst ist es auf ewig im Black Hole des Daten-Orkus verschwunden. Archiv-Software muss gemietet werden (seit der US-Monopolist Adobe die Programme nicht mehr verkauft, sondern sie auf Monatsbasis vermietet, ist der Gewinn des Konzerns exponential gestiegen), zusätzliche Module müssen gekauft und aktualisiert werden uvm. Bei einer dieser „Service-Arbeiten“ bin ich gestern auf das große Foto rechts gestoßen: Ein angefaultes Stück Gemüse hatte ich vor Jahren in eine Austernschale gelegt, um ein Stillleben zu zeichnen. Es war eben nicht beschriftet, mich interessierte aber, wie dieses Gemüse hieß. Vermutlich hatte ich es am Naschmarkt wegen der an Spermatozoen erinnernden Form und der ruppigen Oberfläche gekauft. Aber: wie hieß das Ding? Bevor ich mittels einer Software ähnliche Fotos suchen wollte, musste ich aber erst diese Datei benennen. Also folgende Schlagworte beigefügt: Gemüse, verfault, Auster, Stillleben, schließlich fügte ich noch an: „exotisch“. EXOTIC. Bei den folgenden Suchdurchgängen stieß ich dann auf ähnliche Fotos (keines mit der Benennung des Gemüses), unter dem Schlagwort „exotisch“ waren dann auch die hier zusammengestellten Fotos zu finden, auch EXOTIC KING. Letztere natürlich auch mit Begriffen wie Plastik, Verpackung etc. versehen. Wie kommen diese Früchte zu uns? Wo werden sie unter welchen Umständen produziert? Wie verpackt und transportiert? Was bedeutet aber jetzt der Begriff „exotisch“ für mich?

The database of the Eternal Archive with around 500,000 image files needs to be maintained and new photos have to be “maintained”. The latter is the term used by archivists and means the hardest part: every photo has to be tagged, otherwise it will disappear forever in the black hole of the data orcus. Archive software has to be rented (since the US monopolist Adobe no longer sells the programs but rents them out on a monthly basis, the company’s profit has increased exponentially), additional modules have to be bought and updated, and much more. Yesterday during one of these “service jobs” I came across the large photo on the right: Years ago I put a rotten piece of vegetable in an oyster shell to draw a still life. It wasn’t labeled, but I was interested in the name of this vegetable. I probably bought it at the Naschmarkt because of the shape reminiscent of spermatozoa and the rough surface. But what was the name of that thing? Before I wanted to use software to search for similar photos, I first had to name this file. So the following keywords were added: vegetables, rotten, oyster, still life, and finally I added: “exotic”. EXOTIC. During the following searches I then came across similar photos (none with the name of the vegetable), under the keyword “exotic” the photos compiled here could also be found, including EXOTIC KING. The latter, of course, also provided with terms such as plastic, packaging, etc. How do these fruits come to us? Where are they produced and under what circumstances? How packed and transported? But what does the term “exotic” mean to me?
