Exerzieren im Wald mit liegendem Hund: Ein Bild-Rätsel. Salzkammergut | AT · um 1910 (Foto: Johann Promberger, Repro: Dieter Brasch, © PP · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Über dieses Bild rätsle ich, seit ich es vor rund 45 Jahren erstmals im Fixierbad nach der Entwicklung gesehen habe. Jetzt, wo das Glasnegativ kürzlich professionell und in hoher Auflösung neu reproduziert wurde, kann ich es erstmals genauer anschauen. Drei Frauen stehen dicht nebeneinander, als wären sie in einer militärischen Formation angetreten, ihre Gesichter ernst, ein lächelnder Mann in Uniform steht abgewandt, den rechten Arm erhoben. Ein Hund (ein „Spitz“?) liegt am Boden, in Richtung der Frauen schauend. Die Frauen stehen auf einem Weg, die Umgebung felsig, aufgelockerter Wald, Sträucher, Bäume. Am Kragen der Uniformjacke des Mannes sind drei Sterne wahrnehmbar, könnte also auf einen höheren Dienstgrad hinweisen, ob seine Hose ein Teil der Uniform oder eine lederne „Knickerbocker“ ist, kann ich als ehemaliger Zivildiener nicht sagen. Die Frauen ernst, direkt in die Optik des Fotoapparates von Johann Promberger schauend, die in der Mitte Stehende ist Pauline, seine Schwester, wer die anderen beiden Frauen und der Mann waren, konnte ich Ende der 1970-er Jahre nicht recherchieren – zu einer Zeit als noch einige Menschen lebten, die Auskunft geben konnten. Die Frau rechts hält mit ihrer linken Hand die Schürze.

Welche Situation hält diese Aufnahme fest. Ist es ein ironischer Kommentar zur Zeit? Ich bin ziemlich sicher, dass dieses Foto vor dem Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges, also vor 1914, entstanden ist. Für mich hat es einen ganz seltsamen Charakter – es liegt eine mir unerklärliche Spannung darin. Ein lächelnder, in die Landschaft blickender Soldat, drei „angetretene“ Frauen, ein liegender Hund, eine Szene irgendwo im Gebirge des Salzkammergutes.

Ein Enigma, das mich wohl weiter beschäftigen wird.

Now that the glass negative has recently been professionally reproduced in high resolution, I can take a closer look at it for the first time. Three women stand close together, as if they had lined up in a military formation, their faces serious, a smiling man in uniform stands averted, his right arm raised. A dog (a “Spitz”?) Lies on the ground, looking in the direction of the women. The women stand on a path, the surroundings are rocky, loose forest, bushes, trees. As a former civil servant, I cannot say whether his trousers are part of the uniform or a leather “knickerbocker” on the collar of the man’s uniform jacket. The women seriously, looking directly into the lens of Johann Promberger’s camera, the one standing in the middle is Pauline, his sister, who the other two women and the man were, I couldn’t research at the end of the 1970s – at one time when some people were still alive who could provide information. The woman on the right is holding the apron with her left hand.
What situation does this recording capture. Is it an ironic comment at the moment? I’m pretty sure that this photo was taken before the start of World War I, i.e. before 1914. For me it has a very strange character – there is an inexplicable tension in it. A smiling soldier looking out into the landscape, three women “standing up”, a lying dog, a scene somewhere in the mountains of the Salzkammergut.
An Enigma that will probably keep me busy.
