Eskimo ist die Sammelbezeichnung für die indigenen Völker im nördlichen Polargebiet, deren Siedlungsgebiet sich von Nordostsibirien über die Beringstraße und die arktischen Regionen Alaskas und Kanadas bis nach Grönland erstreckt. Die beiden Hauptgruppen sind die Inuit (östliche Eskimos) im Norden Kanadas und auf Grönland sowie die Yupik (westliche Eskimos) auf der russischen Tschuktschen-Halbinsel und in Alaska. Eine kleinere Dialektgruppe der Inuit sind die in Alaska lebenden Iñupiat. Weiterhin verwandt sind die zu den Ureinwohnern Alaskas zählenden Aleuten. Zusammen sprechen sie eskimo-aleutische Sprachen und bilden als relativ homogene Kulturen das nordamerikanische Kulturareal der „Arktis“.

Eskimo ist eine österreichische Speiseeismarke des Unilever-Konzerns. Eskimo wurde 1927 als Marke für das Eisgeschäft der österreichischen MIAG gegründet, später an die österreichische Unilever AG verkauft. 1962 wurde die Tiefkühlkost-Produktion von Hans Petter in Raasdorf, nahe Wien, übernommen. 1965 erfolgte die Verlegung der Produktion zur gemeinsamen 1. kombinierten Speiseeis- & Tiefkühlproduktion in Groß-Enzersdorf für „Eskimo“ und − vermutlich zum ersten Mal so genannt − „Iglo“.

1970 erfolgte die Fusion der Unilever-Tochter Eskimo Eis / Petter Iglo TKK mit der Nestlé-Tochter Jopa Eis / Findus TKK zur Eskimo-Iglo GmbH (Unilever 75 %, Nestlé 25 %). Während die Eisproduktion 1998 eingestellt wurde, blieb der Markenname „Eskimo“ für das Speiseeis bestehen, das seitdem, weiterhin unter Eskimo vertrieben, aus Deutschland importiert wird. Inzwischen wird Eskimo von der Unilever Austria GmbH in Österreich vertrieben. Zur Unternehmensgeschichte siehe auch Eskimo-Iglo. Auch vor Etablierung des „Heartbrand“-Logos war das Eskimo-Logo ähnlich dem Langnese-Logo. Einige sehr beliebte Eissorten werden ausschließlich in Österreich verkauft.

Unilever ist ein niederländischer-britischer Konzern. Das Unternehmen ist weltweit einer der größten Hersteller von Verbrauchsgütern. Die Hauptgeschäftsbereiche umfassen die Produktion von Nahrungsmitteln, Kosmetika, Körperpflege- sowie Haushalts- und Textilpflegeprodukten. Unilever beschäftigte 2016 weltweit 168.000 Mitarbeiter in über 100 Ländern (1990 noch 304.000). In Deutschland waren 2013 rund 5.000 Mitarbeiter tätig (1962 waren es 36.000, 27.400 Beschäftigte 1990 und 8.000 Ende 2005). Die 2008 gebildete Unilever-Organisation für die Länder Deutschland, Österreich und Schweiz (D-A-CH) hat ihren Sitz in Hamburg.

Mit einem Umsatz von 60,6 Mrd. US-Dollar, bei einem Gewinn von 6,9 Mrd. USD, steht Unilever laut Forbes Global 2000 auf Platz 103 der weltgrößten börsennotierten Unternehmen (Stand: GJ 2017). Das Unternehmen kam Mitte 2018 auf eine Marktkapitalisierung von ca. 156 Mrd. USD.

Eskimo is the collective name for the indigenous people in the northern polar region, whose settlement area extends from northeastern Siberia via the Bering Strait and the Arctic regions of Alaska and Canada to Greenland. The two main groups are the Inuit (eastern Eskimos) in northern Canada and Greenland and the Yupik (western Eskimos) on the Russian Chukchi Peninsula and in Alaska. A smaller dialect group of the Inuit are the living in Alaska Iñupiat. Also related are the Aleutians of Alaska’s natives. Together they speak Eskimo-Aleutian languages and form as relatively homogeneous cultures the North American cultural area of the “Arctic”.

Eskimo is an Austrian ice cream brand of the Unilever Group. Eskimo was founded in 1927 as a brand for the ice cream business of the Austrian MIAG, later sold to the Austrian Unilever AG. In 1962, the frozen food production was taken over by Hans Petter in Raasdorf, near Vienna. In 1965, the production was moved to the joint first combined ice cream & frozen production in Groß-Enzersdorf for “Eskimo” and – probably for the first time so called – “Iglo”.
In 1970, the Unilever subsidiary Eskimo Eis / Petter Iglo TKK merged with Nestlé subsidiary Jopa Eis / Findus TKK to form Eskimo-Iglo GmbH (Unilever 75%, Nestlé 25%). While ice production ceased in 1998, the brand name “Eskimo” remained in place for ice cream, which has since been imported from Germany under Eskimo. Meanwhile, Eskimo is distributed by Unilever Austria GmbH in Austria. For company history see also Eskimo-Iglo. Even before the “Heartbrand” logo was established, the Eskimo logo was similar to the Langnese logo. Some very popular ice creams are sold exclusively in Austria.

Unilever is a Dutch-British group. The company is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of consumer goods. The main business areas include the production of food, cosmetics, personal care, household and textile care products. Unilever employed 168,000 people worldwide in 2016 in more than 100 countries (compared with 304,000 in 1990). Around 5,000 employees worked in Germany in 2013 (36,000 in 1962, 27,400 in 1990 and 8,000 at the end of 2005). The Unilever organization for Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH), formed in 2008, is based in Hamburg.
With sales of $ 60.6 billion, with a profit of $ 6.9 billion, Unilever is ranked 103rd in the world’s largest listed companies (as of FY2017), according to Forbes Global 2000. The company reached a market capitalization of approximately $ 156 billion in mid-2018.
