Der bedeutende österreichische Filmemacher Ernst Schmidt jr. (1938–1988) darf nicht vergessen werden! Wels, Wien | AT · 1968–2026 (© Nachlass E. Schmidt jr. Zeichnung © PP · # 3696 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Ernst Schmidt jr. verstarb im Jahr 1988 völlig mittellos. Ich kann mich vage an ihn erinnern, bei einer Vorführung brachte er seine Filme in einem Plastiksack mit, ich empfand ihn eher scheu, zurückhaltend. „Er hinterließ ein umfangreiches theoretisches / filmhistorisches Werk und ein bedeutendes filmisches Werk“ schrieb die Künstlerin Linda Bilda (die gesondert zu würdigen sein wird) in der „Gebrauchsanleitung“ des von ihr mit der Secession 2001 herausgegebenen Buches „Ernst Schmidt jr. Drehen Sie Filme, aber keine Filme! Filme und Filmtheorie 1964–1987“, das begleitend zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung in der Secession erschien.

Ernst Schmidt jr. hat gemeinsam mit Hans Scheugl das zweibändige Monumentalwerk „Eine Subgeschichte des Films. Lexikon des Avantgarde-, Experimental- und Undergroundfilms“ herausgegeben: edition suhrkamp, Frankfurt / M, 1974. 1. Band: 634 Seiten, Band 2: 1.300 Seiten!! Von ihm stammt das einzige Filmdokument der Veranstaltung „Kunst und Revolution“, einer Aktion von Anastas, Otmar Bauer, Günter Brus, Franz Kaltenbäck, Otto Muehl, Peter Weibel, Oswald Wiener, Herbert Stumpfl im Jahr 1968 im Audimax der Universität Wien (in den Medien als „Uni-Ferkelei“ bezeichnet). Schmidt Jr. Drawing © PP · # 3696 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Ernst Schmidt Jr. died penniless in 1988. I have a vague memory of him; at a screening, he brought his films in a plastic bag. I found him rather shy and reserved. „He left behind an extensive body of theoretical/film-historical work and a significant cinematic oeuvre,“ wrote the artist Linda Bilda (who will be honored separately) in the „user manual“ of the book „Ernst Schmidt Jr.: Make Films, But Not Films! Films and Film Theory 1964–1987,“ which she published with the Secession in 2001 to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Secession.
