Mein Leben im Luxus: Eine Website im Luxus-Restaurant veressen. Wien | AT · 2001–2011 (© PP · # 3083 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Wenn ich – wie ein früherer österreichischer Bundeskanzler – einer Immobilien-/Investmentfirma ein Beratungshonorar in Höhe von € sieben Millionen in Rechnung stellen könnte – ich wüsste auf die Schnelle nicht, was ich mit der Kohle anfangen würde. Gut – ich könnte mich dann ja selbst beraten lassen. Im Luxus lebe ich selbst schon sehr lange. Beim Absichtlos-Streunen in den Untiefen des Ewigen Archivs stieß ich auf eine Reihe unscharfer, verwackelter Fotos, die mich selbst in einem der teuersten Wiener Restaurants zeigen. Wieso das? Wie kam’s dazu? Vor über zwanzig Jahren hatten einer meiner damaligen Studio-Partner und ich die Website eines Restaurants entworfen, als die Website dann online ging, schlug der Besitzer vor, uns (nur) einen Teil des vereinbarten Honorars zu zahlen – den nicht unerheblichen Rest könnten/sollten wir doch in seinem Lokal „veressen“. Irgendwann war mir klar – entweder so oder gar nichts. Schließlich gingen mein Partner, der Programmierer der Website und ich ins Restaurant in der Innenstadt, alle fesch im Anzug mit Krawatte, wenn schon denn schon. Bald kam der „Vorspeisenwagen“ angerollt (li.ob.), für den das Restaurant berühmt war, Hummerschwänze aufgestellt und zahlreiche Delikatessen in Tassen und Schälchen. Was die Gäste meist nicht wussten – ich aber schon – dass die Speisen auf dem Vorspeisenwagen exorbitant teuer waren. Bitte alles auflegen, was der Oberkellner so empfiehlt! Es war ein heiterer, komplett dekadenter Abend (die Mitesser werden hier aufgriund meiner unglaublichen Dezenz nicht gezeigt, klar). Auf dem großen Foto links sind in der spiegelnden Abdeckung der Hummersuppe ich und meine „Kyocera-Digitalkamera zu sehen (für Daten-Forensiker: 1024 x 768 pixel!)

Vor einiger Zeit die Erzählungen von jemandem, der vor Kurzem aus Mali zurückgekommen war: Eine Weberin, die ihr Kind zwei Stunden vorher in der Werkstatt geboren hatte, keine Einkünfte mehr als ein halbes Jahr lang, weil keine Touristen kamen. Keine Baumwolle, kein Material: Mali ist einer der allergrößten Baumwollproduzenten der Welt – alle Baumwollfelder von chinesischen Unternehmen aufgekauft, die einzige Baumwollverarbeitungs-Anlage im Land: in chinesischer Hand. Alle Baumwolle wird exportiert. Fotos von Frauen, die auf einfachsten Webstühle im Freien arbeiten, Kinder mit Ekzemen im Gesicht daneben. Ein Teppich-Kauf um umgerechnet 95 Euro, der das Überleben einer Familie eine Zeitlang sichert. Geschichten nach Geschichten. Ungebremster Kolonialismus – Franzosen, Chinesen, US-Amerikaner. Kapitalismus in rasender Gier. Jetzt, heute.

Die 62 reichsten Menschen der Welt, 53 davon Männer, besitzen inzwischen „genau so viel wie die gesamte ärmere Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung“. Vor einem Jahr habe dieses noch dem Vermögen der 80 Reichsten entsprochen. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt eine aktuelle Studie der Hilfsorganisation Oxfam. Die Geschwindigkeit, mit der die Kluft zwischen Arm und Reich wächst, ist demnach noch größer als erwartet. Das Vermögen der 62 Reichsten sei innerhalb der vergangenen fünf Jahre um 44 Prozent auf 1,76 Billionen Dollar (rund 1,61 Billionen Euro) gewachsen. Im gleichen Zeitraum sank das Gesamtvermögen der ärmeren Hälfte der weltweiten Bevölkerung um 41 Prozent um rund eine Billion Dollar - obwohl die Weltbevölkerung um 400 Millionen Menschen gewachsen sei, so der Oxfam-Bericht.“ (orf.at, 2020)

My life in luxury: Eating a website in a luxury restaurant. Vienna | AT – 2001-2011 (© PP – # 3083 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) If I – like a former Austrian chancellor – could charge a real estate/investment company a consulting fee of € seven million, I wouldn’t know what to do with the money. Well – I could get advice myself. I’ve been living in luxury myself for a very long time. While roaming the depths of the Eternal Archive, I came across a series of blurry, blurred photos of myself in one of Vienna’s most expensive restaurants. Why was that? How did it come about? Over twenty years ago, one of my studio partners at the time and I had designed the website of a restaurant. When the website went online, the owner suggested that he (only) pays part of the agreed fee – we could/should “eat” the not inconsiderable rest in his restaurant. At some point it was clear to me – it was either that or nothing. Finally, my partner, the website programmer and I went to the restaurant in the city centre, all smartly dressed in suits and ties, if nothing else. The “starter trolley”, for which the restaurant was famous, soon rolled up (left above), lobster tails laid out and numerous delicacies in cups and bowls. What the guests usually didn’t know – but I did – was that the dishes on the starter trolley were exorbitantly expensive. Please put on everything the head waiter recommends! It was a cheerful, completely decadent evening (the diners are not shown here due to my incredible discretion, of course). Some time ago, the stories of someone who had recently returned from Mali: a weaver who had given birth to her child two hours earlier in the workshop, no income for more than half a year because no tourists came. No cotton, no material: Mali is one of the largest cotton producers in the world – all cotton fields bought up by Chinese companies, the only cotton processing plant in the country: in Chinese hands. All cotton is exported. Photos of women working on the simplest looms outdoors, children with eczema on their faces next to them. A carpet purchase for the equivalent of 95 euros that secures the survival of a family for a while. Stories after stories. Unchecked colonialism – French, Chinese, American. Capitalism in raging greed. Now, today.

The 62 richest people in the world, 53 of them men, now own “as much as the entire poorer half of the world’s population”. A year ago, this was equivalent to the wealth of the 80 richest people. This is the conclusion of a recent study by the aid organization Oxfam. The speed at which the gap between rich and poor is growing is even greater than expected. The wealth of the 62 richest people has grown by 44 percent to 1.76 trillion dollars (around 1.61 trillion euros) over the past five years. In the same period, the total wealth of the poorer half of the global population fell by 41 percent to around one trillion dollars – even though the world’s population has grown by 400 million people, according to the Oxfam report.” (orf.at, 2020)
