Wien | AT · 2011 (© PP · # 3496 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Cosplay (japanisch コスプレ kosupure) ist eine in Japan geprägte Fanpraxis, die in den 1990er Jahren mit dem Manga- und Animeboom auch in die USA und nach Europa kam. Beim Cosplay stellen die Teilnehmer*innen eine Figur aus einem Manga, Anime, Film, Videospiel oder anderen Medien durch ein Kostüm und Verhalten möglichst originalgetreu dar. Der Begriff Cosplay, das japanische Kofferwort aus den englischen Begriffen costume und play (wörtlich übersetzt „Kostümspiel“), wurde von Nobuyuki Takahashi geprägt, dem Gründer des japanischen Verlages Studio Hard. Takahashi verwendete seine Neuschöpfung erstmals im Juni 1983 in einem Artikel für die Zeitschrift My Anime.

Die japanische Populärkultur hat viele eingefleischte Fans, oder Otaku. Menschen, die stundenlang spielen, lesen und schauen, und die fanatische Sammler sind. Viele Fans konsumieren nicht nur kulturelle Produkte, sondern helfen auch bei deren Herstellung, indem sie japanische Filme untertiteln, ihre eigenen Mangas zeichnen und monatelang an Kostümen arbeiten, die ihrer Lieblingsfigur bis ins kleinste Detail ähneln. Anfangs war Otaku ein Schimpfwort, aber heute ist es ein Spitzname, genau wie „Nerd“ und „Geek“ im Westen. Otaku treffen sich auf Kongressen, den so genannten „Cons“.

Die Fotos dieses Tableaus entstanden im Jahr 2011 bei der Aninite an der TU Wien. Oberstes Gebot beim Fotografieren bei Cosplay uä Veranstaltungen: Immer vorher fragen – zum Einen, weil das sowieso angebracht ist, zum anderen, weil die Cosplayer oft eine für die jeweilige Manga-Figur charakteristische Position einnehmen wollen.

In cosplay, participants portray a character from a manga, anime, film, video game or other media as faithfully as possible with a costume and behaviour. The term cosplay, a Japanese portmanteau of the English terms costume and play, was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi, the founder of the Japanese publishing house Studio Hard. Takahashi first used his neologism in June 1983 in an article for the magazine My Anime.

Japanese popular culture has many die-hard fans, or otaku. People who spend hours playing, reading and watching, and who are fanatical collectors. Many fans not only consume cultural products, but also help to create them by subtitling Japanese films, drawing their own manga and working for months on costumes that resemble their favourite character down to the smallest detail. In the beginning, otaku was a dirty word, but today it is a nickname, just like ‘nerd’ and ‘geek’ in the West. Otaku meet at conventions, the so-called ‘cons’.

The photos in this tableau were taken in 2011 at Aninite at the Vienna University of Technology. The top priority when taking photos at cosplay and other events: Always ask beforehand – firstly because this is appropriate anyway, and secondly because the cosplayers often want to assume a position characteristic of the respective manga character.
