Das Meeting der Comic Book Guys. Wien | AT · 2011–2019 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) Den Termin der „COMIC & Film BÖRSE“ in der Volkshochschule Meidling, Längenfeldgasse hatte ich mir nach einigen Jahren Pause diesmal wieder im Kalender vorgemerkt. Erstmalig war ich vor etwa 10 Jahren mit meinem Sohn bei der damaligen „Wiener Comic & Figuren-Börse“ in der MGC-(Textil)-Halle im 3. Bezirk in der Nähe der Gasometer – seit einigen Jahren gibt es mindestens zwei Comic-Messen in Wien, die beim Gasometer heißt jetzt „VIENNA comix MARKET“ – ist größer mit höherem Eintritt und eben die in der Längenfeldgasse (Eintritt € 6,-, mit FB-Top-Fan-Button-Screenshot ermäßigt € 5,-) Ich selbst bin ja mit „original“ Mickey-Mouse-Heften in meinen ersten Lebensjahren großgeworden, die mein Vater aus den USA geschickt, die ich im Nachtkastl meiner Großeltern gestapelt hatte – und die alle dann weggeschmissen wurden. Praktisch ein Vermögen vernichtet!! Meine „Heftl-Leidenschaft“ wurde aber beständig von meiner Oma gefördert, die mir jede Woche 5 Schilling gegeben hat für die aktuellen Micky-Maus (sic!), Fix & Foxi, Lupo oder Bessy-Ausgaben. Meinen Sohn hab ich dann behutsam in die magische Welt der bunten Hefte einbegleitet, Halbjahr für Halbjahr mit ihm zur Messe gepilgert, er ist dann ins Simpson-Lager abgedriftet, später ins Manga-Department übergewechselt – ich bin in die Graphic-Novel-Welt eingetaucht, in der ich bis heute fest verankert bin.

Die Comic-Börse in der Längenfeldgasse erlebe ich als Treffen der Experten, der dedicated collectors – absolut „male-dominated“: Männer in mittleren Jahren mit Aktentaschen und meist handgeschriebenen Listen in der Hand, seltener mit ipads, auf der Suche nach fehlenden Exemplaren des jeweiligen Sammelschwerpunktes. Mit flinker Hand und schnellem Blick werden die dicht an dicht gereihten, in Plastikhüllen sorgfältig verpackten Hefte durchgeflippt. Viele Händler und Sammler kennen sich seit Jahren persönlich, man kennt sich auch untereinander – es ist im Kern eine feste „community“ mit vielen anderen Besuchern aufgefüllt.

Es ist in gewissem Sinnen fast ein Kongress der „Comic Book Guys“, wie ein wiederkehrender Character aus der TV Serie Simpsons heißt:

„Comic Book Guy is the common, popular name for Jeff Albertson, a recurring fictional character in the animated television series The Simpsons. He is voiced by Hank Azaria and first appeared in the second-season episode "Three Men and a Comic Book", which originally aired on May 9, 1991. Comic Book Guy is the proprietor of a comic book store, The Android's Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop. He is based on "every comic book store guy in America" and represents a stereotypical middle-aged comic-book collector. He is well known for his distinctive accent, disagreeable personality and his catchphrase, "Worst [blank] ever!"

Vienna | AT · 2011-2019 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv) The date of the “COMIC & Film BÖRSE” in the adult education center Meidling, Längenfeldgasse I had marked myself after several years break this time again in the calendar. For the first time I was with my son at the former “Wiener Comic & Figuren-Börse” in the MGC (textile) hall in the 3rd district near the Gasometer about 10 years ago – for some years there have been at least two comic fairs in Vienna, the gasometer is now called “VIENNA comix MARKET” – is larger with higher entry and just in the Längenfeldgasse (admission € 6, -, reduced with FB-Top Fan Button screenshot € 5, -) myself I grew up with “original” Mickey Mouse notebooks in my first years of life, which my father sent from the US, which I had stacked in my grandparents’ night box – and which were then thrown away. Virtually destroyed a fortune !! My “Heftl-passion” but was constantly promoted by my grandmother, who gave me 5 shillings a week for the current Mickey Mouse (sic!), Fix & Foxi, Lupo or Bessy issues. Then I carefully accompanied my son into the magical world of colorful booklets, hauled him to the fair half-yearly, then he drifted off to the Simpson camp, later switched to the manga department – I immersed myself in the graphic novel world in which I am firmly anchored to this day.
The comic exchange in the Längenfeldgasse I experience as a meeting of experts, the dedicated collectors – absolutely “male-dominated”: middle-aged men with briefcases and handwritten lists in hand, rarely with ipads, looking for missing copies of the respective collection focus. With a quick hand and a quick look, the notebooks, packed tightly together and carefully packed in plastic covers, are flipped through. Many dealers and collectors know each other personally for years, they also know each other – it is basically a solid “community” filled with many other visitors.
It is, in a sense, almost a congress of the “Comic Book Guys,” as a recurring character from Simpson’s TV series is:
