Coca-Cola in Kabul – Essen, Trinken & Farben sehen in Afghanistan. Extrabonus: Erstkontakt mit einer MANGO! Kabul | AF · 1973 (© PP · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Ich konnte es kaum glauben, als ich vor Kurzem auf einem SW-Foto, das ich vor 48 Jahren während eines Aufenthaltes in Afghanistan aufgenommen hatte, ein Schild sah, das mich an Coca Cola denken ließ: Zwei markante Typo-Blöcke, darunter die helle, charakteristische „Welle“: Coca Cola. Offensichtlich hatte ich es viele Jahre nicht beachtet, war mir nicht weiter aufgefallen. Ein Basaar, ein offener Markt, teilweise mit Stoffbahnen überspannt. Links, im hellen Teil des Bildes, ein junger Mann, der etwas Schweres trägt, im Vordergrund der Schattenseite ein Mann, der zu mir blickt, während er mit dem geflochtenen Teil in seiner Rechten die Holzkohlen auf dem schmalen Grill mit den Lammfleisch-Spießen anfächelt. Er steht in einem zur Straße offenen Imbiss, am erwähnten Schild für die Farsi-unkundigen Rucksack-Touristen, die „Back-Packers“: Sandwich. Ein Metallstuhl, ein Kübel, zwei ebenfalls mit dem Coca-Cola Schriftzug „gebrandete“ Holzkisten, darin allerdings Flaschen einer anderen Marke. Vor wenigen Tagen hat mein langjähriger Freund Markus Hanzer auf FB – bekanntlich meinem einzigen Fenster zur Welt – ein Kinderfoto von sich und seinem Bruder gepostet und dazu vermerkt, er hätte das SW-Foto durch eine neue Funktion im Photoshop koloriert bzw. kolorieren lassen. SW-Fotos wurden schon viel früher manuell, mit lasierenden Farben, koloriert und das Einfärben von monochromen Fotos war digital schon lange möglich – das war aber neu für mich: Click & Colorize! Wenn ich bei einer Software nicht mehr weiter weiß oder ein digitales Problem habe, ist Markus der erste und einzige, den ich anrufe – er ist stets bestens informiert, er kennt wohl alle Programme im Grafik, Bildbearbeitungs-, 3-D und Video-Bereich, die es auf dem Markt gibt. Abgesehen davon hat er sicher die umfangreichste Coca-Cola Foto- und Paraphernalien-Sammlung und ein 100-e Seiten umfassends Skript über die Marketing-Mechanismen von Coca-Cola verfasst. Ich bat ihn also, das alte SW-Foto zu kolorieren. Das Ergebnis ist sowohl erstaunlich als auch unheimlich, wie ich finde.

„Montag, 25. 6. 73. Fühle mich besser. Frühstück 2 Spiegeleier, Brot, Tee. Bis jetzt, ca 8 h abends, insgesamt 6 Tee, 2 davon in Teeshop am Black Basaar. Dreckig, dunkel, Lehmboden und Wasser aus Ledersäcken, aber guter Tee. Cola-Flaschen mit gelbem, grünem und rotem Inhalt. Iran-Botschaft (Basaar), Ansuchen um Visa: 90 Afghani (30 öS = österr. Schilling, Anm.) + 1 Photo. Beamte verspricht es für morgen mittag. Amerikaner brauchen nichts bezahlen, müssen offiziell 2 Tage warten. We’ll see. Entdecke Vorliebe für MANGOS. Äußerlich ungefähr einer (unleserlich) Zitrone ähnlich, allerdings glatte Haut und großer flacher Kern. Saftiges Fleisch, mehr süß als säuerlich, fremdartiger, köstlicher Geschmack. Kaufe 7 Stück, je 2 Af(ghanis). Rice-Pudding in Sigi’s Restaurant. Habe Verlangen danach. Richtig deutsches bzw. etabliertes Lokal. (Unleserlich) und „guter“ europ. Music. In Kabul Rice-Pudding (10 Afs) ähnl. Milch-Reis mit Zimt und Rosinen. Sättigend. . . “
Coca-Cola in Kabul – food, drinks & colors in Afghanistan. Extra bonus: first contact with a MANGO! Kabul | AF · 1973 (© PP · www.ewigesarchiv.at) I could hardly believe it when I recently saw a sign saying me to Coca on a b / w photo that I took 48 years ago during a stay in Afghanistan Cola made you think: Two distinctive typographic blocks, including the bright, characteristic “wave”: Coca Cola. Obviously I hadn’t paid attention to it for many years, hadn’t noticed it any further. A bazaar, an open market, partially covered with panels of fabric. On the left, in the bright part of the picture, a young man carrying something heavy, in the foreground on the shady side a man who looks at me while he fills the charcoal on the narrow grill with the lamb skewers with the braided part in his right hand . It is in a snack bar open to the street, on the aforementioned sign for the Farsi-unfamiliar backpackers, the “Back-Packers”: Sandwich. A metal chair, a bucket, two wooden boxes also “branded” with the Coca-Cola logo, but they contain bottles of a different brand. A few days ago my long-time friend Markus Hanzer posted a child’s photo of himself and his brother on FB – known to be my only window to the world – and noted that he had colored the b / w photo using a new function in Photoshop. B&W photos were colored manually much earlier, with translucent colors, and digitally coloring monochrome photos had been possible for a long time – but that was new for me: Click & Colorize! If I don’t know what to do with software or have a digital problem, Markus is the first and only person I call – he is always well informed, he probably knows all the programs in the graphics, image processing, 3-D and video areas that are on the market. Apart from that, he has certainly written the most extensive Coca-Cola photo and paraphernalia collection and a several hundred page script on the marketing mechanisms of Coca-Cola. So I asked him to colorize the old b / w photo. The result is both amazing and scary I think.

“Monday, June 25th, 73rd Feel better. Breakfast 2 fried eggs, bread, tea. So far, about 8 o’clock in the evening, a total of 6 teas, 2 of them in the tea shop at the Black Basaar. Dirty, dark, clay floor and water from leather sacks, but good tea. Cola bottles with yellow, green and red contents. Iran embassy (bazaar), visa application: 90 Afghani (30 öS = Austrian shillings, note) + 1 photo. Officials promise it for noon tomorrow. Americans don’t have to pay anything, they officially have to wait 2 days. We’ll see. Discover a preference for MANGOS. Outwardly roughly similar to a (illegible) lemon, but with smooth skin and a large flat core. Juicy meat, more sweet than sour, strange, delicious taste. Buy 7 pieces, 2 Af (ghanis) each. Rice pudding in Sigi’s restaurant. Desire for it. Really German or established restaurant. (Illegible) and “good” europ. Music. In Kabul rice pudding (10 Afs) similar. Milk rice with cinnamon and raisins. Filling. . . “
