Mein Leben mit Arnulf Rainer. Und: Was wurde aus dem Arnulf Rainer Museum in New York? New York | US; Klagenfurt, Wien | AT · 1995–2020 (© PP · Ewiges Archiv, Artwork AR © A. Rainer) Vor mittlerweile 25 Jahren war ich das letzte Mal in New York, möglicherwseise wird es überhaupt das letzte Mal meines Lebens gewesen sein. Nach 5 Jahren Arbeit im ORF in der Digitalen Grafik, in denen ich viele kurze Animationen („Signations“) für das Kinderprogramm gemacht hatte und drei Jahren im internen ReDesign-Team (Leiter Grafik: Markus Hanzer), in denen ich daran mitgearbeitet hatte, das von Neville Brody (Mitarbeit: Oliver Kartak) entworfene neue Design des ORF umzusetzen, hatte ich 1995 beschlossen, mir eine „Auszeit“ zu verordnen und hatte mich einige Wochen nach New York verabschiedet. Dort beswuchte ich ua. das im Stadtteil Chelsea gelegene „Arnulf Rainer Museum“, das nicht sehr groß, aber sehr kompakt in einem sehr schlichten, klaren Gebäude untergebracht war (gr. Foto links). Heute morgen bin ich auf dieses Foto „gestoßen“ und fragte mich, was wohl aus diesem Museum geworden war. Die Antwort im Netz: „Established in 1993 in the Chelsea district of lower Manhattan, this two-year project brought together more than one hundred and fifty paintings and sculpture from 1954 to 1993 by the renowned Austrian artist, Arnulf Rainer. The Ayn Foundation is committed to comprehensive, large-scale projects by major international artists for presentation to the public. Current projects include Andy Warhol's The Last Supper, and Maria Zerres' September Eleven, located in the west Texas town of Marfa.“ Das heißt, ich hatte das Museum im letzten Jahr des Bestehens besucht.

Die Arbeit von Arnulf Rainer beschäftigt mich allerdings schon viele Jahre und begleitet mich täglich, weil sich in der Kunstsammlung des Ewigen Archivs auch einige Werke befinden, darunter das Foto einer Selbstdarstellung rechts (Detail), das ich in den 1980-er Jahren in Wien in einer Galerie gekauft hatte, die auch nicht mehr existiert. Rechts oben ist ein Ausstellungsplakat: A. R. Selbstdarstellungen, Galerie Grünangergasse (Plakatsammlung des Ewigen Archivs) Während der Ausgangsbeschränkungen in der Corona-Zeit begann ich, eine Reihe von Filzstiftportraits bzw. Selbstportraits zu zeichen, in der unteren Reihe eine Referenz an A. R. (Nach einiger Zeit schneiden die Gummiringerl dann schon ordentlich ein.) There I visited, among other things. the “Arnulf Rainer Museum”, located in the Chelsea district, which was not very large, but very compact in a very simple, clear building (large photo on the left). This morning I “came across” this photo and wondered what had become of this museum. Arnulf Rainer’s work, however, has occupied me for many years and accompanies me every day because there are some works in the art collection of the Eternal Archive, including the photo of a self-portrayal on the right (detail), which I took in Vienna in the 1980s bought a gallery that no longer exists. On the top right is an exhibition poster: AR Self-portraits, Galerie Grünangergasse (poster collection of the Eternal Archive) During the initial restrictions in the Corona period, I began to draw a series of felt-tip pen portraits or self-portraits, in the lower row a reference to AR (after some time then cut the rubber rings properly.)
