Abschied von Alexander Kluge (1932–2026). Wien | AT · 2018–2026 (© PP · # 3741 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Mit seinem Film „Abschied von gestern“ aus dem Jahr 1966 wurde im Jänner dieses Jahres im Filmmuseum die Retrospektive der Werke des großen Filmemachers, Schriftstellers und Juristen Alexander Kluge eröffnet, am 5. Februar kam der mittlerweile 93jährige persönlich nach Wien, um im Rahmen der Werkschau seiner Filme im Filmmuseum eine Einführung zu seinem neuesten Film „Heterotopie der Oper“ (s. link) zu geben und auch bei der Eröffnung seiner Ausstellung „Nachts träumen die Kulissen von ungesehenen Bildern“ im Atelierhaus der Akademie im Semperdepot anwesend zu sein! Vor Beginn seiner ungemein lebendigen, interessanten und humorvollen Einführung zum Film meinte er zum Publikum: „Sie haben sich heute keinen leichten Film ausgesucht!“. Ich habe diese Einführung aufgezeichnet und mit Zustimmung von Alexander Kluge und Michael Loebenstein, Direktor des Filmmuseums veröffentlicht. (s. link)
Ich selbst habe im Jahr 2018 ein Interview mit ihm für meinen Film „Das Ewige Archiv – ordnen und geordnet werden“ geführt und aufgezeichnet: Im Juni 2018, in der Zeit, als ich an meinem Film „Das Ewige Archiv – ordnen und geordnet werden“ arbeitete, erfuhr ich, dass der deutsche Filmemacher, Fernsehproduzent, Schriftsteller und Drehbuchautor Alexander Kluge in Wien sei, um seinen erst fertiggestellten Film „Happy Lamento“ im Belvedere 21 vorzuführen und seine Ausstellung „PLURIVERSUM“ zu eröffnen. Nach der Filmpremiere kontaktierte ich die für Presse- und Öffentlichkeit zuständige Mitarbeiterin des Belvedere 21 und fragte, ob es eventuell möglich sei, ein kurzes Videointerview mit Alexander Kluge zu führen und aufzuzeichnen. Sie meinte, der Terminkalender sei extrem dicht, aber sie würde ihn fragen. Zu meiner Überraschung und großen Freude teilte sie mir einige Stunden später mit, der Filmregisseur wäre bereit für ein Gespräch – zwei Stunden vor der Eröffnung seiner Ausstellung. Am Tag der Eröffnung also mit Patrick Spanbauer, On Screen und kleinem Equipment (2 Kameras, Stative, Ton, LED-Strahlern) in die Räume der Ausstellung im Belvedere 21, die voller Monitore waren, einen Platz gesucht, wo wir einerseits Monitore im Hintergrund hatten, aber möglichst wenig Spiegelung, schnell das Equipment aufgebaut, kurz getestet. Alexander Kluge kam mit einer Mitarbeiterin seiner Produktionsfirma dctp, ich stellte mich kurz vor, versuchte in wenigen Sätzen mein Projekt Das Ewige Archiv vorzustellen und ihm die Intention des in Produktion befindlichen Videos zu vermitteln, er setzte sich in den Stuhl in Position – Kamera, Ton ab und los gings. Die Begegnung mit ihm werde ich nicht vergessen. Der damals 85-Jährige sprach ohne Vorbereitung derart präzise, klar und luzid zu jeder Frage, die ich ihm stellte – es war unglaublich. Von den etwa 30 Minuten, die wir mit ihm aufzeichneten, war der Großteil für das Video verwendbar, es war beim Schnitt eher die Frage, worauf wir aus Zeitgründen verzichten mussten. Alexander Kluge zu Archive: „Archive – ein seltsames Wort. Es ist etwas Elementares, es ist der Respekt vor den Dingen. Heiner Müller hat es so formuliert: „Das eigentlich Poetische ist das Sammeln“. Sammeln ist mehr als eine kuratorische Tätigkeit oder eine verwaltende. Sammeln ist eine aktive, eine fundamental poetische Aktivität. Tatsache ist, wir verstehen Zeiten nur, wenn wir sie archivieren.“

Vienna | AT · 2018–2026 (© PP · # 3741 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) With his 1966 film „Yesterday Girl,“ the retrospective of the works of the great filmmaker, writer, and lawyer Alexander Kluge opened at the Film Museum in January of this year. On February 5th, the now 93-year-old Kluge came to Vienna in person to give an introduction to his latest film, „Heterotopia of the Opera“ (see link), as part of the retrospective of his films at the Film Museum, and also to be present at the opening of his exhibition „At Night, the Scenery Dreams of Unseen Images“ at the Academy’s studio building in the Semperdepot! Before beginning his incredibly lively, interesting, and humorous introduction to the film, he said to the audience: „You haven’t chosen an easy film today!“ I recorded this introduction and published it with the permission of Alexander Kluge and Michael Loebenstein, Director of the Film Museum. I conducted and recorded an interview with him in 2018 for my film „The Eternal Archive – Ordering and Being Ordered“: In June 2018, while working on my film „The Eternal Archive – Ordering and Being Ordered,“ I learned that the German filmmaker, television producer, writer, and screenwriter Alexander Kluge was in Vienna to screen his newly completed film „Happy Lamento“ at Belvedere 21 and to open his exhibition „PLURIVERSUM.“ After the film premiere, I contacted the Belvedere 21’s press and public relations officer and asked if it might be possible to conduct and record a short video interview with Alexander Kluge. She said her schedule was extremely full, but she would ask him. To my surprise and great delight, she informed me a few hours later that the film director was available for an interview—two hours before the opening of his exhibition. So, on opening day, Patrick Spanbauer, On Screen, and a small amount of equipment (two cameras, tripods, sound system, LED spotlights) took us to the exhibition rooms at Belvedere 21, which were filled with monitors. We searched for a spot where we had monitors in the background but as little glare as possible, quickly set up the equipment, and did a quick test. Alexander Kluge arrived with a colleague from his production company, dctp. I introduced myself briefly, tried to explain my project, „The Eternal Archive,“ and convey the intention behind the video in production. He sat down in the chair, got into position, switched on the camera and sound, and off we went. I won’t forget meeting him. The then 85-year-old spoke so precisely, clearly, and lucidly to every question I asked him—it was incredible. Of the roughly 30 minutes we recorded with him, most of it was usable for the video; the editing process was more a question of what we had to cut due to time constraints. Alexander Kluge on Archives: “Archives – a strange word. It’s something elemental, it’s respect for things. Heiner Müller put it this way: ‘The truly poetic thing is collecting.’ Collecting is more than a curatorial or administrative activity. Collecting is an active, a fundamentally poetic activity. The fact is, we only understand times when we archive them.”
