A Bigger Crash: 527.250 Bilder sind dann mal weg. Montréal | CA; Wien | AT · 2002–2023 (© PP · # 2988 · www.ewigesarchiv.at) Es war dann wieder mal soweit (leider kein schlechter Scherz) Gestern die Bilddatenbank des Ewigen Archivs angeworfen – alleine, was nicht aufzeigt, ist die externe Harddisc mit allen Fotos und Videos, die zur Datenbank verlinkt sind. Alle Kabel raus- und wieder hineinstecken, klopfen, neustarten (nein: beten und/oder VooDoo-Zauber diesmal nicht!) Einfach weg, die Festplatte zeigt sich auch nicht auf anderen Computern, ist erledigt, gecrashed, hinüber (gr. Foto re.) Klar – es gibt Spezialfirmen, die dem etwa zigarettenschachtelgroßen Ding im Reinraum möglicherweise die Daten absaugen können, aber das kostet ab 1.000 €. Ein sonderbares Gefühl– soll mit einem Schlag alles weg sein, was der fleißige Bilder-Imker über einige Jahrzehnte hin zusammengescharrt hat? Aber, da solche Abstürze, Festplattenfehler etc nicht zum ersten Mal passiert sind, relativ entspannt heute zum Bank-Safe gepilgert, wo die Sicherungs-Festplatten (BUP = Back up) eingesperrt sind. Die Daten da, die Neu-verlinkung dauert seine Zeit – scheint aber soweit wieder alles da zu sein.

ich schreibe das vornehmlich deshalb, um auf die unglaubliche Fragilität von Daten, Datenspeicherungen hinzuweisen.

Auf dem Tableau sind Festplatten aller möglichen Arten, Generationen und Zeiten versammelt, die beiden Hard-Discs auf dem orangen Grund liegen auf dem Eingabeschacht eines Containers eines Mistplatzes der MA-48, wo nach Einwurf einer Münze die mit „funktioniert nicht“ beschrifteten Speicherplatten zerquetscht werden. War da nicht irgendwas mit einem Adlatus des Spezial-Bundeskanzlers Sebastian K., der inkognito einige Festplatten der ÖVP nächtens pulverisieren ließ und dann vergessen hatte, die Rechnung zu bezahlen? ;-)

Die Veröffentlichung von Autokennzeichen erfolgt auschließlich in künstlerisch-/dokumentarischem Zusammenhang und impliziert keinerlei weitere Konnotationen.

Montréal | CA; Vienna | AT – 2002-2023 (© PP – # 2988 – www.ewigesarchiv.at) It was that time again (unfortunately not a bad joke): Yesterday I started the image database of the Eternal Archive – the only thing that doesn’t show up is the external hard disc with all the photos and videos linked to the database. Plug all the cables in and out, tap, reboot (no: pray and/or VooDoo magic this time!) Just gone, the hard disc doesn’t show up on other computers either, it’s finished, crashed, gone (large photo on the right). Sure – there are specialist companies that can possibly suck the data out of the thing, which is about the size of a cigarette packet, in a clean room, but that costs upwards of €1,000. It’s a strange feeling – is everything that the hard-working picture beekeeper has gathered over several decades supposed to be gone in one fell swoop? But, as it’s not the first time that such crashes, hard drive errors etc. have happened, I made a relatively relaxed pilgrimage to the bank safe today, where the backup hard drives (BUP = back up) are locked away. The data is there, the re-linking takes time – but everything seems to be back.
I am writing this primarily to emphasise the incredible fragility of data and data storage.
On the tableau are hard drives of all possible types, generations and times, the two hard discs on the orange background are lying on the input shaft of a container in an MA-48 dumping ground, where the storage disks labelled “not working” are crushed after inserting a coin. Wasn’t there something about an aide-de-camp of the special federal chancellor Sebastian K., who had some ÖVP hard drives pulverised incognito at night and then forgot to pay the bill? 😉
